Marseillan is one of the oldest towns in France and has a colourful history. In Roman times it was already an important port, between Agde and Sète, on the major trade routes crossing the Mediterranean region. In later times drifting sand caused the Bassin de Thau to form behind a 20 kilometre-long sandbar, creating a tidal lagoon ideal for the cultivation of shell-fish, oysters and mussels. Glorious golden sandy beaches fringe the coast where the Mediterranean sea is invitingly clear. The Canal du Midi meets the ocean here, before stretching all the way over to the Atlantic coast; an amazing feat of engineering by Beziers’ son, Paul Riquet. Other attractions include vineyards cultivating the note-worthy Languedoucian wines; picture-perfect countryside wrapping typical French villages; and Marseillan's own 200 year old Noilly Prat distillery.
