In a village in the South Hams within easy reach of Salcombe and the beaches, in this area of outstanding natural beauty is Home Farm - theundergroundstream. Inside the newly renovated traditional stone hay barn are rough buffed concrete floors, slate and wood - giving a minimal rustic, yet contemporary feel - a bit boho/wild! Superking beds with Emma award-winning mattresses and crinkly 100% linen duvet cover and one room has two European single mattresses (super king when pushed together) with soft crinkle pure cotton bedding. Each room as its own private en-suite shower room and loo. Glazed stable doors function as both window and door, opening onto the garden and raised path, along which the kitchen is accessed. In the morning, help yourself to continental breakfast. The kitchen is stocked with coffees, teas and cereals, and the little fridge freezer is stocked with croissants to bake, breads to toast, butter, jam, yogurts and milk. Let me know if you need gluten or dairy free. The babbling spring rises from under the barn just in front of the kitchen (where it gets its name and why we cannot accommodate pets or children). Eat breakfast together at the communal dining table, or in the garden. There is a cosy pub with good food a short walk up the hill. Ben Howard's Outside - my fave for brunch or lunch - is barely two mins away by car. There are many great restaurants and cafes in the area! You can walk the beautiful coastal path which links with some great places to eat and drink too. At both Bantham and Bigbury you can hire surf, paddle or body boards and all the wetsuit gear and even lessons. Check-in from 3pm. Check out by 11am. Iron and hair dryer available in the kitchen. Wifi not great in these parts even though broadband is installed - such is tech! Free parking is close by on rough country lane and driveway, and there are steps down to The Underground Stream rooms, so NOT for people with limited mobility!
Hi! My name is Susie and I’m a contemporary artist living with my husband, Christopher - also a contemporary artist, in this hidden village which is superbly placed to drive to the best beaches and places in the area - all about equidistant. From Salcombe to Burgh Island and the whole coast in between. Adjoining the farmhouse where we live, we are delighted to offer only three ensuite double bedrooms for a maximum of 6 guests. I was born and grew up locally and I love it here, this being an especially beautiful part of Devon - especially if you love water like I do! I go wild swimming all year round (unless it’s too stormy) and have set up a sea swimming group called The Sprats - Safety in a shoal! I stand-up paddle board, body board when the waves are big, and I am learning to surf at Bantham Beach when the waves are polite enough. Having knowledge and experience of this area, I can advise where to explore the sea, river or moor. I can advise how you can book surf, body, or paddle boards, kayaks, and all the equipment required (wetsuits etc), including lessons if you'd like them. I can also advise where to walk, run, picnic, and eat out. Upstairs in the gallery I teach yoga and with Christopher, curate art exhibitions of works by contemporary artists. We host creative writing retreats. The dawn chorus in spring is a symphony! Hedgehogs rustle around and owls hoot at night - with one young one hooting in the day! Woodpeckers tap in the nearby beech wood. In the summer butterflies throng round the butterfly bushes and the crickets sing. It is great looking after Home Farm - The Undergroundstream, seeing the birds and animals coming more and more into the garden since we dug up the concrete yard, planted it up and allowed the stream to once again flow.
The local pub with good food, and village shop (+ post office) are a short walk up the hill and sells pasties, pastries, fruit and snacks. On the lane to Bantham there is a friendly place to have lunch or coffee called Outside, with a fab skate park. We are excellently located for many wonderful beaches which are all about approximately 3 miles away. One secluded cove in particular is good for snorkelling. There is a nudist beach which you could give it a whirl so to speak! An old smuggling cove is found after a pleasant coastal walk. At the famous surf beach Bantham, you can hire a wetsuit and take some surf lessons, or hire a body board and catch a wave. The Gastrobus here serves good snacks and coffee al fresco. You might prefer to hire or even buy your wetsuit, SUP, and surfboard at the local very helpful water sports shop - Triocean - a 1 minute drive or easy walk up the road. SUP and walking adventures can be arranged in the village with guides. Yoga classes are available upstairs in the with me. Yoga classes are also available in Kingsbridge at Harbour House, plus a gallery and cafe. Kingsbridge is approx. 5 mins away and has a great health shop, leisure centre including gym, squash courts and swimming pool, and many restaurants including a fish+ chip shop, and cinema. In Kingsbridge down by the quay, every first and third Saturday is a farmer's market which sells Dartmoor honey - good enough to eat with a spoon from the jar! From here there is a quay where boats make trips up the river to Salcombe. By road, Salcombe is 4 miles away. There are two local coastal golf courses (Bigbury and Thurlestone) complete with great views and also spas. Walk up to the top of Burgh Island and catch the sunset before a pint in the ancient Pilchard Inn. Gin and rum tasting at Salcombe, and so I hear, the most excellent jam doughnuts! Run it off on a special coastal running track at Bolberry Down, or along the sheltered tree-shaded River Avon. Look for otters!
