The town of Thornhill is just a 10 minute drive from Shinnel House. There you will find a Co-op, Spa and a number of independent food shops including a butchers and bakers. For all the usual amenities, the larger market town of Dumfries is a 30 minute drive.

The nearby village of Moniaive, a finalist in the 2018 Scottish Culture Awards, is well worth a visit and hosts regular events including a Folk Festival (May,) a Horse Show. (July) and various music events throughout the year. Local town of Thornhill has a range of shops, pubs, and cafes. The area gives an unrivalled cross section of life from days gone by through the industrial revolution to modern life; however, one thing that has not changed is the tranquil beauty that greets all who venture into Southern Scotland. Solway coast and Galloway Forest Park are within easy reach. Outdoor enthusiasts will also enjoy the many activities available on the door step, including walks and cycle routes with mountain bike tracks for all abilities, being geographically central for many of the 7Stanes mountain bike trails (Ae Forest, Mabie, and others), golf, fishing, clay pigeon shooting, and horse riding.
