A visit to the Green Seafood Shack on the quayside is a must for those who love their shellfish. The town is otherwise known as the Gateway to the Isles with the Calmac ferry terminal on South Pier giving access by boat to Mull, Colonsay, Tiree, Lismore and Barra. And there’s a handy water taxi across to Oban’s nearest island – Kerrera – from the town’s North Pier. The town has two impressive cathedrals and an array of independent shops, including the must visit Oban Chocolate Shop and Oban Distillery. There are several supermarkets, cafes, pubs and restaurants, a cinema, golf course, swimming pool and a selection of other land and water-based sports facilities. Not forgetting safe sandy beaches for those looking for a traditional ‘seaside holiday’, numerous historical sites within easy reach including Dunstaffnage and Dunollie Castles and Inveraray Jail and for the horticulturist’s, visits to Inveraray Castle & Gardens and Arduaine Gardens are a must. There really is plenty for all ages to explore.
