I’m Dimitris, a sound ecologist and a PhD candidate, with a passion for the acoustic ecology. I’ve spent years recording and studying the unique soundscapes of Crete - from mountain winds to bird calls and flowing springs. 🏞️ Kakopetros – Then and Now Kakopetros is a small, traditional village tucked into the rugged hills of western Crete, in the Chania region. Its name, which translates to “bad stone” or “rough rock,” reflects the area's dramatic terrain and resilient spirit. 📜 A Glimpse into the Past Historically, Kakopetros was a shepherds' village, shaped by the rhythms of nature and the strength of its people. The stone houses and narrow paths speak to centuries of rural life — self-sufficient, quiet, and closely tied to the land. During the Ottoman and German occupations, Kakopetros played a role in the island’s resistance movements, and many families carry stories of bravery and hardship passed through generations. 🌿 Kakopetros Today Today, the village remains a hidden gem — quiet, authentic, and largely untouched by mass tourism. It offers a rare window into traditional Cretan life, with old olive trees, roaming goats, and timeworn stone homes that echo the past. Visitors come for the peace, fresh mountain air, and scenic hiking trails, as well as the warm welcome of the few locals who still live here year-round. Kakopetros is also a perfect base for exploring western Crete: just a short drive to Elafonissi beach, the gorge of Sirikari, or the cultural sights of Chania.
