Villa Leonidas is located in the mountain village of Steironas. On the eastern slope of a hill, at an altitude of 550 meters, is the small rural settlement of Stirona, just 28 km from Heraklion and 16 km from the traditional village of Archanes. From the few historical data that exist, it seems that the village has been inhabited since at least the period of the Venetian occupation, when the first written evidences date from it. Later, during the Turkish occupation, according to historical sources, Christians and Muslims lived in Steironas, while the latter constituted its dominant population group during the 19th century. Around 1900 there were no Christians in the settlement. After the departure of the Muslims, the settlement in 1924, with the exchange of populations, was massively colonized by refugees from Iconium in Asia Minor. Within the settlement, it is also worth visiting the late-Byzantine, frescoed church of Panagia, with the famous miraculous, according to traditions, icon of Panagia.
