Peroj is located on the southwest coast of southern Istria, surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation. Peroj is a prehistoric settlement that was already a famous summer resort in Roman times. After the plague that hit this area in 1561, persistent initiatives of the Venetian provincial governors led to re-settlement, when 13 Greek-Orthodox families from Montenegro were enthroned here, from which the current residents come. It is extremely interesting that the Montenegrins from Peroj, from their arrival 350 years ago until today, have kept their Orthodox religion, language and Cyrillic alphabet, which can still be seen on tombstones. Today Peroj has 830 inhabitants, most of them peasants and fishermen. The place is being strongly and continuously urbanized and is aimed at the development of tourism, and offers a large number of accommodation capacities in private houses and villas built in the entire area up to Barbariga.
