The name of the Guest House is a combination of two words, Shanti and Sojourn. Etymologically, ‘Shanti’ is derived from a sanskritic root which conveys the meaning of ‘peace, solace, comfort, healing, wholesome’ etc. It’s a well-used and popular word which significantly conveys the promotion of community relationship as well as advocating peace and harmony. In Khasi, this word has an implication of ‘self-support’ from the word shan, kyrshan (to support) and kti (hand) ie, to support oneself / one’s community with one’s own hands or community resources. ‘Sojourn’ is an old French word but popularly used in English. It means ‘a temporary stay’ and is derived from the nomadic practices of ancient and Semitic peoples who were constant travellers in their own times.
