Interestingly, each of the six rooms are based on a colour theme. Thus you have the all White room, the Black room, Green, Yellow, Pink and Red rooms where every item from towels to room colour to ceiling fans and dustbins are of the same specific colour. No wonder celebrities like Papon, Zubeen Garg, Nawajuddin Siddiqi and numerous politicians and business tycoons stay here. As do foreign tourists from Australia, South Africa, France. Located by a lush green tea garden, in a quiet upscale neighbourhood of Seujpur, Baruah’s creative skills find full expression here. A believer of recycling, repurposing and DIY, here you will find old suitcases turning into bedside tables, oil drums becoming a basin stand, unwanted wood turning into sculptural centre tables, helmets becoming wall lights, milk cans and Assamese drums (doba) becoming tables, et all. There is no end to the creative story as you encounter one surprise after another. A large bookshelf actually is a secret door to one of the rooms, an apparent photo frame is actually a surprise, surprise, table. Assamese everyday utensils become wash basins, tyres become mirrors. But the Homestay isn’t just about that. There is a mix of the contemporary cutting edge design material that are creatively put together. Add to it the good, relaxed chilled out vibes of the place. The host is an entertainer, a storyteller and with his world wide exposure make for a great conversationalist. Sometimes his 74 year old mother pitches in to cook ethnic Assamese food made from the wild herbs and plants that grow in the campus. She has been featured in National Geographic videos and so on. In fact, the menu of the Homestay is uniquely written in Assamese accented English and the photos of it had gone viral all over the world. Tea garden Homestay has taken the concept of Homestay to another level altogether!

Born in Dibrugarh in the same property, the owner is a Master of English Literature from Delhi University and had worked as a Managing Editor and lifestyle writer in Hindustan Times, Indian Express, India Today and Air India magazine. He has travelled to 55 countries, and after 30 years in Delhi, moved back to his roots to open this one of a kind Homestay in the country. He also has 2 other Homestays in Goa. Baruah is also a solo drummer and loves electronic music.
