Gamla Apótekið (The Old Pharmacy) was built in 1859 and was one of the largest and most elegant houses in Iceland at the time, featuring a spacious ground floor and high ceilings. In 2016 and 2017, Minjavernd meticulously rebuilt the house from the ground up. It was moved off the lot, a new foundation was poured, and then it was returned to its original location. All reusable materials, including the wooden paneling on the interior walls, were incorporated into the restoration. The house was rebuilt in accordance with the new building code and the strictest fire safety requirements. Essentially, The Old Pharmacy is a new house, and few properties in Iceland have been restored with such care. The house contains three apartments: a large apartment on the main floor and two smaller ones on the upper floor.
