Formerly called Sommoborgo, the characteristic district of San Nicolò is part of the original nucleus of Pontremoli. It incorporates the medieval "Porta Parma" (seat of access to the Museum of the Stele Statues), and is one of the two historic districts of the city that annually, since the Middle Ages, have battled in the traditional "Challenge of the Bonfires". San Nicolò overlooks the Via Francigena and is located at the foot of the Piagnaro Castle.
