Palazzo Morosini degli Spezieri rises majestically behind the small square in front of the Church of S. Augustine, once known as the small square of the church and today as Campiello S. Agostin. Although the building has ancient origins, the lunettes above the windows on the two visible sides—facing the small square and the canal—depict allegorical figures designed in the eighteenth century. These lunettes have been restored to their original splendor in the recent renovation. The palace belonged to the Morosini family. In 1204, Domenico Morosini, commanding a Venetian galley during the Fourth Crusade, brought to Venice the four horses now atop St. Mark's Basilica. These horses, made using lost wax casting and covered with gold plating, are believed to have come from the Hippodrome of Constantinople. Named after Campo San Polo, the largest square in Venice after Piazza San Marco, this area is rich in history and culture. Rialto holds the greatest historical significance in the area, featuring its iconic bridge, the bustling fish and vegetable market, and the church of San Giacomo di Rialto, traditionally considered the oldest in Venice. Notable architectural and artistic landmarks include the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, the Chiesa di San Rocco, and the Scuola Grande di San Rocco and Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista, both with annexed churches. San Polo boasts the highest concentration of cafes and shops, particularly "bacari," typical Venetian cafes.
