Vernazza: A Timeless Gem of the Cinque Terre Vernazza is one of the most iconic and enchanting villages in the world. A place where time seems to stand still, with its pastel-colored houses, narrow alleyways, and a charming little harbor overlooking the crystal-clear sea. Travelers and lovers from all over the globe come here to experience its breathtaking sunsets and the romantic atmosphere that fills every corner of the village. The historical roots of Vernazza date back to the year 1000 when the village, then known as "Vulnetja," was founded by the people of Reggio, who sought refuge on the coast to escape barbarian invasions. In the 11th and 12th centuries, the territory was under the rule of the Obertenghi family before passing to the Da Passano and Fieschi families. In 1276, they sold all their rights over Vernazza and Corniglia to the Republic of Genoa, transforming the village into an important shipyard and strategic outpost. Even today, traces of Vernazza’s glorious past can still be seen in the imposing Genoese fortifications: the defensive towers at the entrance of the village, on either side of the current train station, and the reconstructed tower standing on the highest rocky promontory overlooking the sea.
