The Saltery is a gem of vernacular architecture, situated on the quay in the fishing village of Kvalnes. Here you can stay exclusively, quietly and have many experiences. The house recently restored and centrally located in Lofoten near the main road E10, and in the middle between the towns of Leknes and Svolvær. The Saltery was one of the first buildings to be raised on the new quay, in the late 1920's. Here they salted cod on the ground floor. The rest of the house was split between living quarters for fishermen and storage space for tools and fishing equipment. The ground floor is still an open space, but today with a kitchen and dining space, fireplace and a bathroom by the stairs leading up to the first floor. Upstairs we find a lounge with a view out to the ocean as well as two bedrooms. Both bedrooms have double beds (160cm and 180cm). On the second floor you find a working space with a sofa as well as two bedrooms, one with two beds (each 90 cm) and one with one bed (120 cm). Suitable for 6 persons. Minimum 3 nights.

Towards the turn of the century, Kvalnes was affected by a decline in population. Houses were sold and new people moved in. Kvalnes is one of the six inhabited places in Vestvågøy with midnight sun. People who like Kvalnes are often people looking for presence, closeness to nature, and self-expression. Here you can be yourself. Let the day go by, just observing sun and light, tide and wind, bird life and seaweed, northern lights and stars, snow and ice. That's why you're as likely to meet an astrophysicist from Belgium as a birdwatcher from Canada, an Indian photographer or an Australian surfer here. This was not always the case. Until the 1980s most people who lived at Kvalnes were what we call fisher-farmers. They survived through a combination of farming and fishing.
