Surrounded by incredible mountains, and situated on the edge of crystal clear Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown is New Zealand’s leading visitor destination. The region is renowned for its four distinct seasons, spectacular scenery and world class activities and attractions. THE HISTORY OF QUEENSTOWN: For many years people have been drawn to the beautiful lake and alpine areas around Queenstown starting with early Maori who came in search of Pounamu (greenstone). European settlers followed with their sights set on fertile grazing land. They discovered a whole lot more when gold was found in the region’s waterways. When the gold rush hit the region in the 1860s, it marked the start of an ongoing international fascination with the Queenstown region. QUEENSTOWN ACTIVITIES: The Queenstown region is world-famous for adventure and is the birthplace of many iconic activities including commercial bungy jumping and jetboating.
