The gateway to the peninsula was once a gold mining town, and relics of the era still remain today, many of the oldest homes in the district are found here. The Thames coast boasts one of the most scenic stretches of road in the country, and is truly spectacular in early summer with its explosion of red pohutukawa flowers along the road.
