Have you ever dreamt of listening to kiwi call through the night, stargazing under the dark sky, and swimming in clear blue ocean water on an island wildlife sanctuary in New Zealand's beautiful Hauraki Gulf? This is what you can experience when staying on Rotoroa Island. Our holiday homes – Oranga, Mahoe and Serenity – are well-equipped stand-alone homes that give you the classic ‘kiwi bach’ experience on Rotoroa Island. Surrounded by native bush, with views across the Hauraki Gulf and just steps from beautiful swimming beaches, you'll feel transported to another world. Each holiday home has a spacious outdoor entertaining area with BBQ and seating so you can enjoy the restorative nature surrounding you. They also have living and dining areas, TVs, kitchens, linen provided, free Wi-Fi, hot water and power, plus all the other amenities of a modern bach to ensure you have a comfortable stay. All food needed for your trip must be brought to the island with you, as there are no restaurants or supermarkets on the island. A small island kiosk, stocked with ice creams and cold soft drinks, opens in the afternoon when ferry visitors are on the island.

Rotoroa Island is a New Zealand wildlife sanctuary in Auckland, on the Hauraki Gulf. Travel to the island is via private vessel, water taxi, or Explore Group ferry only, and takes approximately 75 minutes from downtown Auckland. Rotoroa is dedicated to the conservation of native species and preserving the island's social and natural history. You'll find four sheltered swimming beaches – Ladies Bay, Men's Bay, Mai Mai Bay and Cable Bay. The island has two lookout points, the North and South Tower, which provide incredible views of the surrounding Hauraki Gulf and the island itself. At the South Tower you'll find the beautiful sculpture Kaitiaki, by Chris Booth, which leans towards the Ruthe Passage. Throughout the approximately 10 km of walking tracks on the island, you'll discover a range of native species unique to New Zealand – takahē, tīeke (saddleback), popokotea (whitehead), and pāteke (brown teal), among others. At night you might hear North Island brown kiwi calling – a special and unique sound to hear in New Zealand. The island is home to various historical buildings and an award-winning Visitor Centre & Museum, where you can uncover the fascinating 100-year social history of Rotoroa Island – from a rehabilitation facility to a wildlife sanctuary. Historical buildings include the small jail, butchery, schoolhouse, chapel, and the Salvation Army cemetery.
