Smith house sits alongside the majestic Whanganui River. There is a very pleasant walkway along its riverbank which is just metres from your room. This scenic walk not only provides an easy route to the city centre and its attractions, but is also part of a favourite local walk/run known as ‘The Bridges’ which loops back to your starting point. The Whanganui River is the longest navigable river in Aotearoa NZ. Since the first Maori arrived in this country the area has been a place of importance, especially as a gateway to the interior of Te Ika-a-Māui North Island. Those inter- connections up and down the river for Maori are as strong today as they have ever been. Latterly, with European settlement, prosperity for the city continued. Substantial amounts of Victorian and Edwardian architecture was built mostly to a very high standard and a lot of it still survives today in the most impressive street collection of its type in the country. The likely saviour of these buildings was that Whanganui only enjoyed a static growth in the second half of the last century which meant rampant development didn’t occur as it might have done.
