We are formerly known as The Artists Retreat - we have changed the name in September for a much better fit as when you where a kid your cubby/fort/playhouse had everything - this is the grown up version! Here you will have the opportunity to have an experience you won't forget in a hurry! We have town views - that means we are out of town a whole scenic 8 minutes! It is a cosy, unique, self contained 2 storey house (all you need to bring is any additional food/drink items) made from reclaimed and some new materials and has a comfy homely feel. We supply your Breakfast items so you can cook when your ready, the beds will be freshly made so you can just flop into bed, towels provided and also some extra food and pantry items too. If using the extra foods we ask that you leave enough to cover the purchase of more to replace so the next guests can enjoy it too - after all it helped you out so pass it forward to the next guests too! We are on our own private little hill and you have fantastic views overlooking Kaikoura Township, Farmlands to the Sea & Mountains. Remember - no-one else has our views! Get your camera ready as the views are amazing, the animals are cute and friendly, the Sunrise and Sunset and night starry sky is just stunning. We, your hosts are friendly too! Whatever length stay you booked you will be wishing you could have an extra night 2 or 3 so keep us in mind when planning as there is so much to do in Kaikoura and even here you can just relax re-group and continue on you holiday - you will find you are comparing our place to everywhere you stay now - been told we have set a high bench mark! so no pressure if you read this just click book or visit our new Cubby House on social medias to see for yourself.

Richard and Leanne live at the top of the driveway in a seperate house with 2 of our 6 children. We love our special bit of NZ paradise and we are happy to be able to share our place and easy going lifestyle with you. We will show you around and introduce you to the friendly animals and then pretty much keep to ourselves so you can enjoy your time here. It is up to you how your time is here is spent - if you want to interact with us or keep to yourselves. We are pretty laid back and easy going and whatever you choose to do you will enjoy your stay here and in Kaikoura. Just make sure you think about how long you want to stay as so many people leave and wish they had booked an extra night here! All we ask is - PLEASE make sure you understand where you are staying! To have what we are able to be offering you, you need to be out of town. There is nothing worse than looking at reviews and get 7.5 for location as we aren't in town - we are out of town by a scenic very worth the 8 minute drive - you cant have farm animals in town remember! If you want a stark modern house, or a town stay please don't book here you need to go elsewhere. BUT, if you want a different memorable kind of stay in a quirky house with pretty much everything you will need for your stay you will be happy you decided to stay here at the Cubby House.

Kaikoura is world famous for Whale watching, Swim/Kayak with Seals and Dolphins & Albatross Tours. Some other activities to do whilst here: Fishing Charters, Trekking, Surfing, Scenic Flights, Mini Golf, Scuba Diving, Snorkelling, 18 hole and 9 hole Golf courses, Mountain Bike tracks, Shopping, Cafes, Pubs, Bike hire, Bird watching and the Ski field is only 90 minutes from our door, Fyffe House, Museum, plus a lot of other outdoor activities. There is plenty to keep you entertained indoors too - Escape Room, Museum, i-Site, but whatever you choose to do make sure you book your trips early and make time to relax and enjoy the stunning Kaikoura views! Don't forget your accommodation here is packed with plenty of board games to keep you entertained or just hang out and enjoy the atmosphere - you won't really want to leave the house!
