The neighbourhood is a mix of native Madeirans, South Africans, Germans, British, Austrians, French, Dutch, Polish, Americans, etc. Madeirans are a kind and considerate people and it is truly a pleasure living amongst them. Prazeres is a quaint town with flat walking areas, famous aqueduct (levada) trails, walking trails to two beach towns, a specialty coffee shop, ATM, kids zoo, farmers market, supermarket, bike rental, 13 eateries, petrol station, taxi, - all 3-15 walks from Casa Vida Alegre. There are small farms growing fruit and vegetables; goats and cows are also raised by our neighbours. There is a Sunday am farmers market with home grown produce including organic fruits and vegetables, hot freshly baked muffins and bread, eggs, local honey, etc. There is a tea shop at the zoo with a variety of teas, local apple cider and locally produced jams. Also some great places for snacks or a full meal. Calheta with two sand beaches is a European designated "Blue Flag" beach and is a 9 minute drive from the house.
