The church in Spodnja Šiška is one of the oldest in Ljubljana. It is dedicated to St. Bartholomew and is also known as the Old Church (Slovene: Stara cerkev). Built in the 13th century, it holds historical significance for the area. Interestingly, the church underwent remodeling between 1933 and 1938 by the renowned Slovene architect Jože Plečnik, adding to its architectural charm and cultural importance within the community. The name Spodnja Šiška, literally meaning 'lower Šiška', distinguishes the settlement from its neighboring counterpart, Zgornja Šiška ('upper Šiška'). Its etymology traces back to *Hiška, a diminutive form of the common noun hiša, meaning 'house'. The transformation from H- to Š- in its phonology may be attributed to Upper Carniolan palatalization, discontinuous assimilation, or both. The name's semantic origin is linked to a single small house believed to have originally stood in the settlement. The German name for the area was Unterschischka in the past. Historically, the oldest settlement core of Spodnja Šiška lies between Milan Majcen Street (formerly Saint Bartholomew Street, Svetega Jerneja cesta) and Fire Station Street (Gasilska cesta). The houses in this area were characterized by long strips of land in a north-south direction. Notably, in 1382, a peace treaty between the Republic of Venice and Leopold III of Habsburg was signed in front of St. Bartholomew's Church in Spodnja Šiška, wherein the Austrians agreed to return the city of Trieste. Spodnja Šiška was annexed by the City of Ljubljana in 1914, marking the end of its existence as an independent settlement.
