The woodwork is predominantly natural Hemlock, with the main staircase imported from Germany and made of oak. The mansion has six slate fireplaces, which once served as the primary source of heat for the home. The Victorian-period lithographed slate fireplaces are examples of ornate fireplaces and are quite rare. The mansion is a stunning example of Neo-Jacobean architecture, which is a blend of German Romanesque and English Tudor styles. The Tate Mansion is also featured in the Encyclopedia of Indianapolis as an early example of a mansion. The mansion boasts twenty-five original stained glass and leaded crystal windows that add to its charm and appeal. Tom and Jeanne are amazing people who have been working tirelessly for the past 25 years to restore the beautiful Tate Mansion in downtown Indianapolis. Originally planning to open it up as a bed and breakfast, their plans changed when they decided to adopt a sibling group of nine brothers and sisters, all from the same mother. With these new additions to their family, Tom & Jeanne had 15 children to care for, which understandably put a pause on their B&B plans. Despite the challenges, and now being empty nesters, they find joy in welcoming guests into their home and are dedicated to being the best caretakers of the mansion, always striving to leave it in better condition than when they first acquired it.
