Surrounded by 860 private acres of tropical rainforest and featuring an on-site lake, a swimming pool, a sun terrace and games room, Arenal Observatory Lodge & Trails is located within the Arenal Conservation Area, only 2.7 km from the Arenal Volcano. The location is the main feature of the property. The lodge is an ex-Smithsonian research site established after the 1968 eruption. It has excellent, private hiking trains that include waterfalls, a frog pond (which we visited multiple times with our children to spot several frogs without any guide), an observation tower, waterfalls, a working farm and more. The views of the volcano are exceptional from both the restaurant, which also overlooks Lake Arenal, and many of the rooms. The grounds are fantastic and the staff put out various food to attract birds and other wildlife. We saw coati, howler monkeys and many birds. It was fantastic and the children loved it. Contrary to some previous reviews, the food was good (not excellent) and I suspect they have altered the menu based on feedback from previous guests.

Our room was stand-alone, with a private terrace and jacuzzi. Everything was very clean, and the reception and restaurant staff friendly and helpful. We frequently walked to the centre which took about 20 minutes.

There are SO many great sodas and places to eat at in town, we didn't necessarily want to pay for included breakfast. The kitchenette was perfect, and we could re-heat leftovers etc, but it really felt more like staying at our own place. We hardly saw another person (staff or guests, but we know they were there!) the whole time, and it was so peaceful. Staff was very responsive to questions via Whatsapp, and the instructions for getting in and out of the gate/ parking area/ keys etc were very clear.

It isn't just a place to sleep, it's a place to explore, to learn (not only about yourself but about the natural world around you), it's a place to truly channel that pura vida energy, and all of this was possible for us because of the owner, Jay. He's an incredible host and always doing the most! If you have the opportunity to stay here, please take part in the night tour - it was truly one of the many highlights of our trip; we learned so much about the jungle and it's hidden wonders! Breakfast was always so delicious and they were incredibly accommodating to my partner's celiac disease and provided gluten free alternatives. Overall, we had an incredible time here, what a special place. We will never forget it!

Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park is 50 km away. The nearest airport is Juan Santamaría International Airport, 98 km from La Finca Lodge. This place was the equivalent of heaven on earth. I would consider just buying a ticket to Costa Rica to spend a week here and enjoy total peace and relaxation. Our room was big, with a huge balcony that had two chairs and a hammock. The view is amazing. The place feels so safe that you can sleep with the big windows fully open and be woken up by the horses eating grass outside your window. The WiFi worked great. The shower was huge and with water flowing very well. The location is a big farm so you can even go walk and see dogs, cats, horses, donkeys, chickens, anything. They have a swimming pool and a hot tub that you can use anytime you want. They also offer paid laundry service and they have a restaurant. Breakfast was also included and it was great. The hosts and waiters are all really kind and accommodating. Each room has a private parking spot right outside the room. I mean, I could go on for days about how great this place is. My girlfriend and I almost cried when we had to leave. This place is just so great. Do yourself a favor: if you have a car, avoid staying in La Fortuna and stay here. You'll love it.
