Boasting river views, Eiheiji Hakujukan offers accommodation with an open-air bath, a garden and a terrace, around 15 km from Phoenix Plaza. Among the facilities of this property are a restaurant, a 24-hour front desk and a lift, along with free WiFi. The property is allergy-free and is set 400 metres from Eiheiji Temple. Great place to stay, with the flavor of a Buddhist inn and the facilities of a 5* hotel. Excellent shojin ryori cuisine. We were a family and they prepared a private dining room for us. Quiet, invited to enjoy everything in a serene way. The Buddhist celebration experience was fantastic, a monk that spoke excellent English explained everything and we also enjoyed a 'private tour' to the Eiheiji. Nice onsen also. 100% recommendable overall.

Situated in Takahama, 10 km from Kongoin Temple, WakasaSurfHotel ILMARE features accommodation with a private beach area, free private parking, a shared lounge and a terrace. Featuring a restaurant, this 4-star hotel has air-conditioned rooms with a private bathroom. The accommodation offers room service, a concierge service and organising tours for guests. Beachfront hotel offering an extraordinary view of the sea, which is particularly impressive when waking up in the morning. The beach was quite sheltered, as there were not many other guests at the time - and as the hotel only has seven units. The hosts were amazingly hospitable; they were always friendly and went the extra mile during our 3-day stay to help us with all kinds of requests. The facilities and some of the furniture were brand new and designed specifically for the hotel. In fact, the hotel only opened a few months ago, so it hasn't appeared on Google Maps yet. Breakfast is served at the affiliated Italian restaurant right next door. For context, this was a leisure trip with a family and a primary school child. We travelled by train.

Located in Awara in the Fukui region with Fujino Genkuro Memorial Museum nearby, Awara Onsen Matuya Sen Sen provides accommodation with free private parking, as well as access to a sauna. With an open-air bath, the 4-star ryokan has air-conditioned rooms with free WiFi, each with a private bathroom. The accommodation features a 24-hour front desk, a lift and luggage storage for guests. Getting there was very easy and easily accessible by a direct bullet train from Tokyo and then just bussing it up - they also have coaches available to take you to and from the JR station if requested. The room was amazingly clean and big - the food as well was very nice especially for a ryokan where the food can sometimes be a hit and miss. The public onsens were also very nice with amenities and drinks everywhere. The most impressive thing about our stay was definitely the service - everyone is very nice - we had Akira, who looked after us most and he was extremely kind and attentive during our stay. I usually dont think it makes a very large difference but this was something else. Last thing is we came on a Mon/Tues - which seems to be the quietest time for them, with maybe seeing around 6 or 7 other groups in total hanging around on Monday and a bit more on Tuesday - which we liked as the public onsens were basically empty if you came in the off peak times and the whole place was very quiet. Though there are alot of facilities catering for larger crowds inside the onsen and outside so if you do want a bit of atmosphere I would reccommend booking closer to the weekend. All in all our stay here was very nice and would definitely reccommend.
