The room was really nice and spacious, the bathroom was clean and nicely done. We loved our stay here, the owner was really lovely and helped us with everything we needed. There was definetly enough parking space and the location was a great gateway for Mt Cook. 11/10 experience.

Lovely situation at bottom of hill. Very lovely bathroom and toiletry selection. Kitchen very well stocked with everything you might need. Plenty power points and usb oh t for charging!! Very friendly helpful staff. Lovely outdoor seating area at BBQ.

All guest rooms in Colonial Motel are equipped with a flat-screen TV and a hairdryer. This was one of the best places we stayed during our trip in NZ. Our suite was so spacious and comfortable. The only flaw was that the room was a bit dusty, which triggered my allergies. However, from our own experience in the car, the whole area is pretty dusty overall, which is not their fault. Everything else was spotless. It has everything a person might need, as it is fully contained. We just didn't make more use of the kitchen because the area had so many lovely places to eat out.

The motel is set in a garden with outdoor seating and BBQ facilities. This delightful (and tiny, 5 room) motel was the perfect stop for us. We were not looking to city walk in the evening, but if we were, it was about 30 minutes away from Lake Tekapo. Instead we went to dinner at a delightful restaurant in nearby Fairlie (6 minutes), the only town of consequence. (Kimbell is not a town, just a spot on the map.) We could also have had dinner at the delightful Silverstream Hotel, which is not related to the Mt. Dobson Motel although they share a parking lot. The room was very large and had a full kitchen which would have been very useful if our stay was more than one night. It was a bit of step-back-in-time furnishings but impeccably clean. On our way out of town the next day we stopped at the Fairlie Heritage Museum and learned a lot about the area. They had a section devoted to the Hamilton Jet boat engine... this company invented the jet boat and is the world's largest manufacturer of them; he got his start here! That was a delightful (unresearched) surprise! It has a little cafe as well. We also ate at the popular Fairlie Bakeshop in town.
