The staff were so kind and accommodating, and truly tried to go above and beyond for their guests. Every time we came back to the hotel we were greeted with an enthusiastic welcome back and ushered into the warmth and comfort of the reception area. Breakfast was exceptional and beautifully presented. The hotel also arranged for our luggage to be sent to our next destination which was extremely helpful as it meant we didn’t have to worry about storage lockers during our visit to nearby Shirakawa-go. Overall it was a wonderful experience and we’d be beyond delighted to come back.

This is the best hotel we have stayed at!! We loved everything about it. The staff were friendly and accommodating. They helped us with our bags and showed us to our room. The restaurant staff were also fantastic. Our room was beautiful and peaceful. The private bath was like nothing I have seen before. So cool! Overlooking the quiet forest. The beds were comfortable, cozy and the sliding doors hardly let any light in. The womens public outdoor bath is exactly like the pictures, overlooking trees with an amazing red autumn colour tree at the front. It was just so beautiful. There is also a sauna and cold plunge in the women's bath as well as ice cold water to drink after the hot bath. I even had the public bath to myself on the second day which was so cool! The hotel provides great amenities in the lobby and the room. Water, local sweets and shampoo/ soap in the room as well as additional toiletries as you check in. At night there are local snacks, ice water and sake in the lobby. In the lounge they had beer, wine and local apple juice at night. Tea and coffee available in the daytime. There was also ice lollies and milk for after the public bath. The outdoor private baths which are on a first come first served basis were also beautiful. We were able to use them often on our stay which I was glad about as I initially worried they would be too busy. They open til late too. The outdoor deck has a fire pit at night overlooking the trees it was so peaceful. We had the hida beef at dinner which we cooked ourselves on the grill, a great experience. It may be better to book this hotel direct as we didn't realise we hadn't booked breakfast and dinner. Luckily they had space for us when we checked in. There is a free shuttle from the bus station although it is a short walk if you don't have heavy bags. We did so called them via pay phone upon arrival and they were there within 5mins.

The Iroriyado Hidaya was the last stop on our two-week vacation in Japan, and it was by far the best! The warm welcome (incl. tea and tailored recommendations for exploring Takayama), the fantastic breakfast (Hoba Miso!), the Irori & Kotatsu in our room and the private baths made our stay in beautiful Takayama perfect. And when there was no taxi available immediately after checkout, staff even drove us to the station. Thank you for making our stay so memorable!

Breakfast was also very good. Nice place

This was our number one favorite stay in Japan! It is a very traditional guesthouse with a lot of charm, run by a sweet older couple. It is a small operation in a very small town: compared to modern hotels, many things such as dinner and breakfast schedules are more rigid. Please consider this when booking! The old lady who runs the customer-facing part of the guesthouse is very welcoming and accommodating, but also straightforward, which was fantastic from our Finnish perspective. She can use a translation app, gestures and a couple of English words for communication with foreign guests. We could speak some Japanese which made things a lot smoother. I would recommend learning some key phrases in Japanese for this stay! Some reviews criticize the cleanliness of the place, but let's be real here: the establishment is an older wooden house with sliding doors in close proximity to nature. Obviously you can find some cobwebs in the rafters if you look for them. The place is kept in very clean condition where it matters, and that includes guest rooms and dining areas. The set dinner and breakfast were the best food we ate during our trip. Simply fantastic. The hot spring baths were great, but also very hot 😄 Which shouldn't come as a surprise. The public, non-reserved baths are located indoors in a detached bathhouse building. There are separate indoor baths for men and women. The private outdoor bath must be reserved beforehand, after check-in. During our stay there were few other guests, so we were often free to use the private bath at will. If you want to travel here by bus, be ready to study the Nouhi bus timetables carefully. Some buses stop very close to the guesthouse, while some stop a 15min uphill walk away. Pulling a lot of luggage up a mountainside would not be a good time! We used the Yamato Takkyuubin luggage courier service both when arriving and when leaving. Payment is expected in cash.

We absolutely loved our stay here.
The staff were great and very informative about the location and transport options etc.
An absolute must stay if you are near the area.
The food was incredible for breakfast and dinner, very traditional and gorgeous meat.
The private baths are the best we went in, the fact they are private is a massive plus.
We had the best time here; thank you to all the staff!
It is also really close to the bus station to get to the Kamikochi Valley.

This traditional ryokan comes with a nice in/outdoor onsen in a perfectly tranquil environment in the middle of the mountains, which is perfect to take a break from a busy few weeks traveling through Japan. Both breakfast and dinner were a treat, as was the service received throughout our stay. Great value for money as well.
Well appointed traditional Ryokan. Super clean rooms and comfy futons. Attached hot spring bath is intimate and cosy. Public baths were great too.. The dinner and breakfast were super delicious
Rustic ryokan in a beautiful setting, well worth the effort to travel out to. The staff were very friendly and speak good english, both the public and private onsens were clean and well maintained. We had a tasty meal of hida beef and the breakfasts were also very nice. We visited in summer but would love to return in winter as the scenery would be truly stunning!
Very nice Ryokan with fantastic food and nice private onsen.
It was my first experience staying in Japanese Ryokan and I'm super happy that I've chosen Ryokan Murayama. The staff was super friendly and helpful. The Ryokan also has special private Onsens were you can stay with you only your group regardless the gender. The special dinner we order was also quite nice.
A charming and dated ryokan yet affordable with an onsen. My room had a comfortable "balcony" with two chairs and a table, making the most comfortable traditional Japanese room I've stayed. The view over Takayama was great. The staff spoke sufficient English and the wifi worked fine. They serve good Japanese breakfast from 7:30 to 8:30. The Japanese dinner they offer is excellent, though somewhat expensive at 6050 yen. Private onsen for 40 minutes costs 1000 yen. Would definitely come again.
The best ryokan experience we’ve ever had. We barely left the hotel as It’s so relaxing just sit in the cafe or our room and taking in the scenery of the autumn leaves and the mountains. The outdoor onsen was amazing. The private onsen in our room was really nice too. Everything was perfect! Thank you to all the staff at Yunoshimakan we had an amazing time there.
This is not a Ryokan in the true sense but it gets close. The room is big with its own small onsen/bathtub. It's very clean and comfortable. The outdoor onsen is nice. The indoor ones we didn't try (we only stayed one night). The beds are real mattresses. Breakfast is generous and in Kaiseki-style. We didn't book dinner at the hotel. Would recommend.
Bot the public and the private onsen were lovely. If you have tattoos you can just queue up and use one of the three private hot springs. If you go at certain times of the day, there is no one so you can enjoy all the three of them easily. The room was nice, spacious and the bed comfy. Breakfast was also very good, with a great variety and mix of continental and Japanese..
The hot spring is great especially private onsen
