We chose Kikuchi instead of Kumamoto, to get away from the city before our trip to Mt Aso. We got a lovely country house, but the main benefit was the lovely couple who hosted us. Super friendly and helpful. I enjoyed breakfast, my wife skipped hers, so the host packed it as a bento box for our lunch. Vegetables from the garden. A guided visit to the forest to see fireflies. Tastes of local food and drink. It was if we were lodging with my favourite aunt and uncle.

Although we stayed just one night, she made it so memorable. The moment we arrived she helped us with an excellent dinner recommendation and reservation and walked us over - explaining the history of the area to us. She even made sure that the accommodation was heated up before we arrived. I can't recommend this place and Rie enough.
