On our trip to Scotland in May, a journey from Inverness to Balquidder required comfortable accommodation with the option of evening dining and breakfast. Suie Hunting Lodge, located just north of Loch Lomond, met our needs and exceeded our expectations. The roads en route were clogged with construction so we arrived for our 8:00 dinner reservation with only moments to spare. The wonderful staff helped us with our bags and let us catch our breath before enjoying a fine meal, including a tasty soup with crusty bread, beetroot hummus and oatcakes and a superbly cooked salmon fillet. The menu was as impressive as any we had sampled in the larger towns and cities and the wine list was equally good. We finished our day relaxing in the drawing room, sipping on liquors in the comfort of wingback chairs. After a long day of driving, we could have slept on a clothesline but the rooms were divine with excellent beds and linens, newly renovated, spacious bathrooms, vintage furniture and plenty of storage. Breakfast the next morning offered varied and delicious choices, from fresh fruits and juices to bacon and egg combos. When we were leaving, a couple that had spotted the lodge sign from the road had stopped to see if they might get coffees and a bun or cake. The dining room had just produced a selection of glorious looking desserts and were we sorry we didn’t have one more day to drink in everything Suie Hunting Lodge had to offer.

Plenty to see but a visit to the Kelpies is something to see close up, point to notice is the free car park is a fairly long walk and the nearer one is only £3.80 or so all day for a car and is still a little way away but the size of the Kelpies is deceptive and its not till your close the true size is revealed. Falkirk wheel is also worth a visit, we happened to choose a day with poor weather but went on the boat ride on the lift and our friends really enjoyed it. Parking bays (fairly rough) looped into each other up the steep hill with lots of disabled spaces down by the bottom roundabout.

The town of Bo'ness looks pretty enough but for reasons I do...

The town of Bo'ness looks pretty enough but for reasons I do not really understand is almost completely dead - the town centre is barely open even during the day and one can only assume the adjacent Lidl and Tesco superstores have wiped it out. That doesn't explain the actual absence of most lifeforms and I can only believe that the term 'dormitory town' is almost a literal description! This is a shame because there is a fantastic park between the railway and the estuary, the world class Bo'ness & Kinneil railway attracts hundreds of visitors and there appears to be a good motor museum that I would have liked to check out. Something has clearly gone wrong - on a late summer evening, even in Scotland, the town should have been buzzing as many other attractive shoreline towns do...
