The drive on the infamous scenic A82 was highly rewarding when we reached Isle of Glencoe and was greeted by Richard, truly the best reception experience we had in awhile after travelling in various cities. We travelled during Jan 23 and being from Asia, the mountains, lake, warm service and really comfortable rooms are the little things that made us really happy that we specifically chosen Isle of Glencoe as the highlight of our trip. The cosy, warm room was clean and tidy and the G&T complimentary in the room is really the best I had in UK. When in the restaurant, highly recommend the heartwarming cullen skink/chowder. Definitely coming back! P/s: If you have watched Skyfall, you'd definitely recognise the route when driving up. Enjoy the view!

The town is small, peaceful and quiet but a tourist attraction (mainly holiday goers) so it had all the services and facilities we needed. It’s also in the middle of the highlands, with many, many activities, attractions and beautiful nature all around. It’s also a few hours drive from other Highland locations, such as Loch Ness, Fort William, Inverness, Glencoe, Isle of Skye (which we didn’t visit because it’s 3 hours away and I had little kids). We stayed for a week in Aviemore but we could have stayed more since everyday was filled with activity and interesting things to do.

Inverness is the base station for onward trips to highlands.

Inverness is the base station for onward trips to highlands. We booked multiple tours like Loch Ness Tour (Timberbush), Isle of Skye Tour (Timberbush) and NC500 Tour (Rabbies) to explore the magnificent highlands area. And It was an awesome and wonderful and enjoyable experience. Isle of Skye 2 day tour being the best experience. We could spend more time on the NC500 tour however due to shortage of time could only do a day trip, which was also very enjoyable. We eat halal food only and there were multiple options available (Turkish/Pakistani/others). Embar Cafe (close to River Ness hotel where we stayed) also served halal food with delicious breakfast and coffee options. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here.

Portree has a few nice bars, with friendly staff and is a pretty town, easy to cover on foot. The evening roast meal we had was tasty at the Tongadale hotel, but food elsewhere we saw served, looked lovely too. It's a great base to explore the scenic Isle of Skye and the road to it, is a great scenic drive too. It's a fab place.

Thurso still feels a generally friendly town.

Thurso still feels a generally friendly town. The Visitors Centre was excellent, very helpful friendly staff, with advice, directions and postcards. The beach is lovely, and the castle very picturesque, though I have no idea if you can go round it as it is on the opposite side of a long inlet and I wasn't about to walk all the way round there on the off-chance. Good amount of shops, and seemingly banks still in the town. YNot offers expensive but good quality food. If you want a walk, or have a car, the Ferry Inn in Scrabster is a great place to eat too.

Small compact town, but with a few options for food places, gift shops and a short walk to go in search of the loch ness monster.
