We took a car on the ferry from Scrabster which allowed us to roam over Mainland and easily get into town. I'm not sure how comprehensively the public transport covers the island, and don't recall seeing a lot of public buses, so for our (2 night) stay, with lots of sightseeing stops, it was the right call. Had a great evening meal from the specials board at Lucano, near St. Magnus Cathedral.Guest review byRobertUnited States - 8.0

great place to visit with lots to see and do but beware of the weather , autumn storms meant we had to stay longer than planned , was made easier by Lorraine at Polrudden allowing us to stay for 2 extra nightsGuest review bycolinUnited Kingdom - 2.0

The Orkneys was vey beautiful with fantastic scenery but our trip was spoilt by the Stromness Hotel that we stayed at. (BIG MISTAKE). The owners should go to school and learn how to run a hospitality business as they haven't got a clue, unless you are the same ethnicity as them.Guest review byDavidCanada - 10.0

We thought the village of St Margarets Hope was the prettiest of all the villages on Orkney; there is a lovely bay and harbour with two old fashioned inns in which to stay or eat. There are some lovely walks out of the village and a ferry that goes from the harbour to the Scottish mainland in one hour.Guest review byJaneUnited Kingdom - 8.0

We have visited Orkney a number of times but have always been based around Stromness. It was nice to see another part of the island. The Sands Hotel is within easy walking distance and serves lunch and dinner.Guest review byAmanda - 8.0
Lovely and quiet village with all the essentials but lacking...
Lovely and quiet village with all the essentials but lacking evening meal options during the week. However Kirkwall is only 6 miles away with restaurants, takeaways and larger shops. Stenness and Brodgar are on the doorstep so really handy for early morning or late evening visits as alternative to the busier times. A great base from which to visit all of the sites of the North and West coasts. There is a good walk up the hill behind the village that takes in some modern stone pillars and a much older, more interesting Neolithic cairn. It's also possible to follow the marked St Magnus trail over the brow to get a view not only over Finstown but to the coast on the other since of the hill.Guest review byAndy RevellUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Well worth the ferry ride and then some!
Well worth the ferry ride and then some! Between Stromness and Kirkwall, neolithic and medieval ruins, beautiful scenery, the creative trail, educational opportunities, shops and cafes and restaurants and bars, there is so much to see on the Orkney Islands -- we just barely scratched the surface. We didn't even get off the main island, much to my regret. Seriously: However much time you're planning to spend here, double it, then triple that. It still won't be enough.Guest review byKathrynUnited States - 10.0

Our favourite places in Toab were the lovely sandy beaches which had an abundance of wildlife and flowers. We chose to eat at Sheila Fleet's Kirk cafe which had a choice of interesting dishes, but most importantly for us - a delicious vegan dish which we loved. The roads in Toab are easy to get around on and around every corner there are gorgeous views, little stone Orkney houses and fields of inquisitive cows! The wide open views of sea and sky are breathtaking, as are the gorgeous blues and turquoise colours that flood your senses.Guest review byChristinaUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Quiet harbour village on an Orkney Island with a good hotel that has a restraunt and bar. There are two well stocked general merchants and a very good fish shop. Very attractive and peaceful to visit.Guest review byHowardUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Kirkwall is worth visiting.
Kirkwall is worth visiting. It is clean and tidy with local attractions worth visiting. It is a lovely town with all the facilities needed if exploring further afield is not your thing. Ferries to outlying islands are in the harbour with other ferry terminals being only a short distance away. Car hire is and worthwhile and makes exploring the island easy. There seems to be a very effective bus service in Kirkwall too, just an short walk from the centre.Guest review byAnonymousUnited Kingdom
