We loved staying at the Market Tavern in Bampton! Sean greeted us, checked us in and helped with bags. He also made sure we had a dinner reservation which we appreciated. Sean was especially helpful & all service and staff were excellent! We walked the Downton Mile which was our main purpose for staying in Bampton. We drove to Highclere Castle for our tour, which was about an hour drive. But I'm so glad we chose to stay at Market Tavern in Bampton for two nights. We loved the coziness of the Market Tavern, totally enjoyed sitting in the lobby for drinks too!

The Greyhound is a wonderful place with a lot of history and idiosyncracies. The accomodation is to a high standard but I would advise checking out the rooms before you book for size and also for function. Foodwise they have an interesting menu that changes frequently and everything was well cooked and delicious. What truly moves the bar upwards on the Greyhound is the staff - I don't think I have been in a place recently where the staff were as friendly and helpful.

Stunning medieval town with masses of history.

Stunning medieval town with masses of history. Busy busy road. Lots of shops selling over priced tat to people with more money than sense. The town is full of snooty people which detracts from the charm of the place. Favourite place to visit was the church and Manfred Schotten Antiques, the latter because the proprietor knows 95% of the people that walk in are lookie loos (including me and the missus) but he is more than happy to chat and secondly it has a fabulous basement.

Henley on Thames is a vibrant, upmarket town situated on the River Thames, equally brilliant for shopping, lots of attractions and seasonal events like the famous Henley Regatta. I actually spent most of my time enjoying the architecture of the smaller villages around Thame. I found the little 13th century church of Great Haseley very charming. It had a war memorial to the Americans who died protecting the area and its authentic old architecture and church yard were just what I had in mind. Great Milton is dominated by its very expensive manor hotel but I hear the dining is worth the trip if you have the coin.
