Fira is a great town full of varied shops and fantastic places to eat. It can be expensive so plan a little extra money for food though! There are plenty of things to do an see in the town and the public transport to other areas of the island are quite frequent and cheap. Oia is stunning, especially at sunset, but in September it felt overrun with cruise ship crowds and influencers. We loved our simple apartment with its incredible views, starry nights, and the local cats and donkeys. Food and wine are excellent but expensive, and swimming isn’t easy without hiring a car or scooter. Glad I booked Imerovigli over Oia or Fira. It was quieter, more affordable, has amazing views and walking distance to great restaurants. Lovely village but getting very busy. Restaurants were excellent and staff in them very polite and attentive. Best location in Santorini you can get just in the the heart right in between Thira and Imerovigli - 10-15mins walk in both directions. Beautiful and relaxing town with everything you could ask for and still without the noise from clubs until late night like in Thira! Despite being after peak season it was crowded, noisy, traffic jams quite frequent and pricey. We returned after 20 years to discover that it’s not a place for vacation any more. The only downside is the many stairs you need to climb, which can be tiring in the evening after a full day. On the other hand, in the early morning I really enjoyed jogging through the area. Akrotiri is a beautiful town. I definitely recommend visiting the Akrotiri archaeological site, but the entrance fee of 20 euros is honestly way too expensive. A great place to stay as an alternative to Fira, if you are happy to walk into the town for 15 minutes along a beautiful cliff side walk, which is sometimes steep in places and can be very hot!
