FAQs about hotels in Umbria
Hilltop Towns Ringing with Music
One of Italy’s smallest regions, fabulous Umbria has stunning hilltop towns, rolling vineyards and magnificent architecture to rival its more famous neighbour Tuscany.
The capital Perugia is a university town whose cobbled centre houses medieval art, steep streets and shops selling locally made chocolate. It also hosts a jazz festival, while the annual Festival of the Two Worlds is in Spoleto, a town with a hilltop castle and well-preserved Roman theatre.
Remains of a Roman theatre are also in walled Gubbio, one of Italy’s best-preserved medieval towns. North-east, Città di Castello has excellent galleries and a church visible for miles around. The same is true of the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, dedicated to the saint who lived in poverty. Ironically, this hillside town has one of the few 5-star Umbria hotels.
Foligno has a peaceful river and further south Terni is near the multi-level Marmore waterfalls. Orvieto on a sheer escarpment to the north-west houses the jewel in the Umbrian crown – a fantastic cathedral with a gold-mosaic façade.
To the north, jutting into Lake Trasimeno on a piece of land that was once an island, is Castiglione del Lago. In the east, tranquil Norcia in the foothills of the Monti Sibillini National Park houses some of the many Umbria hotels in the countryside on Booking.com.

A stunning town and well worth the visit.
A stunning town and well worth the visit. Friendly people and plenty of cafe and restaurants in the town. Added bonus, traffic free so easy to roam freely. Beautiful churches to enjoy the architecture and amazing views from the city wallsGuest review byMicheleUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Incredibly beautiful old town with lots of charm.
Incredibly beautiful old town with lots of charm. Try to book accomodation in the old town on top of the mountain. Parking difficult. At Piazza Italia, there are street parking spaces for which you can pay on a meter. From 5PM to 10AM the following day, we paid 17 Euros, which is quite acceptable.Guest review byLehmannUnited States - 10.0
It’s a lovely place to wander about in.
It’s a lovely place to wander about in. You come across wonderful little streets and squares at every turning. It was easy for me to get around, but those with mobility issues may find it more difficult. I visited the Pozzo do San Patrizio. It’s an extraordinary structure! The funicular up to the old town from the station takes 2 minutes and is all part of the experience. It was very busy going up, so I did a round trip later on. €1.30 return in an almost empty car.Guest review byAnneUnited Kingdom - 10.0
It’s a fantastic place to visit! So much to see!
It’s a fantastic place to visit! So much to see! I went back up to the Casa Romana and the Teatro Romano and both were well worth the visit. La Rocca has incredible views and a very interesting museum. Then you can go down to the aqueduct, which is stunning.Guest review byAnneUnited Kingdom - 10.0

The quintessential Italian village -- so much history with beautiful cobblestone streets, amazing cafes and quaint shops. We were there for a family baptism and every venue accommodated our large groups with advance planning. Completely gracious and wonderful -- I will definitely return. It's a hidden gem.Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0
Terni is a wonderful city.
Terni is a wonderful city. In my opinion it's a hidden gem of Italy. It's an easy 1-hour train ride from Rome, and on the way to all the northern Italian cities. Terni Centro has almost no cars, so incredibly walking friendly, full of cafes, gelaterias, and pizza. All, with picture book old Italian architecture. Also, Terni really comes alive after 4pm!Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0
We stayed one night.
We stayed one night. Julia, the hostess, was outstandingly helpful and she spoke very good English. The dinner and breakfast were particularly good. We ate dinner outdoors but in good shade from the evening sun. There is a large swimming pool which has a superb view. I highly recommend Romitorio agriturismo.Guest review byPaulUnited Kingdom - 10.0

If you're religious and want to see Cascia and St Rita's birthplace nearby then come or if interested in art history and St Rita's basilica and monastery next door. If driving it's a nice way to pass a morning or afternoon. Not much else to keep you there but scenery roundabout is stunning! We took a taxi organized by hotel and spent an hour or two around her birthplace village -magical views and you can climb up hill to mountain top church!Guest review byMaryUnited Kingdom
