Tama Hotel and sister hotel M&K is a must stay! The rooms are comfortable, with TVs and fridges, cleaned regularly and you're provided with an abundance of amenities. Amazing value for money!! The location is right by a beautiful canal and is a short walk to the JR station Rikuzen Yamashita. The owner is also super lovely and extremely helpful. I came to ishinomaki to visit Tashirojima (cat island) and Matsushima Bay and this was the perfect place to stay! The owner provided a free shuttle to the ferry for cat island, gave me breakfast from a local bakery on the way, helped me to buy my ticket and then picked me up again from the returning Ferry! He also provided free bikes to use to explore ishinomaki more. The hotel also has a cat salon with 11 cute cats you are free to go to and spend time with whenever you like! The hotel also has a cute shop with souvenirs, and the owner gave me a present from here at the end of my stay. You couldn't ask for a better place to stay. I am sad to be leaving and hope to visit again soon. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Ishinomaki - it's the best!

Interesting concept where everything is self-operated with clear instructions. However when I needed help, staff was readily available via a direct call at the counter. Room was spacious, and location was perfect along a shopping arcade. It is quite a walk from the station if you're carrying a big luggage though.

The city of Sendai is charming, easy to navigate (with two major subway lines, going (a) east and west, and (b) north and south-- the fare is usually under US $2.00; as well as the extensive bus lines--each bus ride costs about 200 yen--less than one US dollar), and relatively compact in size. It is not only known for its history, good museums and universities, but for its proximity to Matsushima and Shiogama (that would make an excellent day trip). The city of Sendai has plenty of parks near the city center (all within the walking distance, or a short bus ride), and some of the major boulevards are covered with magnificent trees. You must find out (from your friends or the hotel desk) where to go and dine, as Sendai is known for its abundant blessings of nature, both of the sea and the land, which translates into fresh sea food and nourishing vegetables and delicious meat. My advice, if you want to make a memorable visit to Sendai: make sure to select a very comfortable hotel (and not a business hotel). It will make a qualitative difference to your experience of the city. Also, excellent are the good hot-springs spas nearby, such as Akiu and Sakunami. Some of the major "onsen hotels" run their free shuttle service from Sendai Station. To really appreciate Sendai, you need to talk to the ordinary shop keepers and street sellers, as they retain the warm spirit of old Sendai, not the new "supersized chain-store mentality." Once you find the niche, you will expand your sense of exploration .... into the heart of the city and the entire North Eastern part of Japan.

I visited the first week of September and it was quite hot - I suffered heat exhaustion one day. However, the surrounding area is attractive, with lots of opportunities for hiking (that's how I overheated), kayaking, and other outdoor activities. It's pretty easy to get around by bus. I also enjoyed taking a ferry to "Cat Island" (actual name: Tashirojima).

Declared one of Japan's top 3 scenic views, this is a cute hamlet to get away from big city travel. They have wonderful oyster/seafood restaurants, beautiful shrines, and a gorgeous waterfront. Easy daytrip from Sendai, but worth a night's stay if you have the time.

Zao has a property alpine village, the mountain is great, very scenic. The snow quality is great due to the colder temperatures. The only thing we didnt like was the lift lines on the cable car or ropeway as they call it and the gondola to the top to see the snow monsters. The lift lines were 1-2hrs long due to all of the sightseers. They have a priority line and bus loads of people turn up after you have been waiting for an 1hr and go straight in front of you.

The town of Shiogama is what we Americans call a "bedroom" community of a large city - in this case being Sendai. It has all the basic amenities that a traveler needs (restaurants, convenience stores, etc.). All the action that a typical seeks is in Sendai which is only but a 15 to 20 minute ride by JR Rail. In my opinion, staying in Shiogama has its advantages in terms of affordability (especially for B&Bs) since Sendai can be quite pricey. Travelers should take that into consideration.

There is a vibe about Sendai that is youthful and exuberant.

There is a vibe about Sendai that is youthful and exuberant. It has a lot to offer and is a relaxed city. There is a good music scene here, pretty varied from my limited exploration. A lot of pop / idol-type of things are going on, which is quite interesting. Hanging around, chilling out, meeting friends on the raised walkways by the front of the station seems to be the thing to do of an early evening for young Japanese people, and as such has an easy-going vibe. Indeed, there are occasional pop-up performances from groups which adds a nice sound to the evening. If you like a good walk, why not stroll on up to the ruins of Sendai castle, which is on a hill just outside the main city area. It is the perfect distance for a good bit of exercise, but won't leave you exhausted. The view from the castle grounds is delightful, but don't expect much castle!

I had a fantastic stay at this ryokan.

I had a fantastic stay at this ryokan. The indoor onsen was wonderfully relaxing, offering a peaceful and soothing experience. What truly stood out, though, was the incredible staff. From the moment we arrived, they made us feel like family—attentive, kind, and always ready to help with a smile. Their genuine hospitality really made the stay special. The room was comfortable and traditional, with everything we needed for a cozy, restful night. I highly recommend this ryokan for anyone looking for exceptional service and a peaceful getaway.

This was our first trip to Sendai and we would definitely go again. Such a friendly city. We based ourselves in a hotel at the station so we were conveniently placed to hop on a train and explore other destinations, however, Sendai itself is a very interesting place in itself and there is a lot to do there.

Matsushima is a small tourist city, quite a few coaches and tour parties. The main attraction is a boat trip around the bay which is recommended, although it may be nicer in one of the smaller boats. Don't miss the local temples, which have lovely gardens, and in Autumn, light ups, which shouldn't be missed.
