Great service.. We had some hiccups at check-in but they adjusted everything very promptly and were very welcoming The onsen is phenomenal and really love the freebies - free ramen at night, ice cream post onsen and the welcome drink downstairs and snack in the minibar The rooms while not the largest are so well planned, they feel very spacious unlike most hotels in Japan Overall excellent and I'd mostly like to stay in the Onyado chain

This was the best place we stayed in Japan. The King suite was the most beautiful space I’ve ever seen and the bed felt like sleeping on a cloud. 1. Service - Exceptional service with attention to detail. The staff are very polite. They also drove us down to the nearby eateries outside the hotel. What exceeds expectations is that they call me at 6pm to check what I am having for dinner and great service at the point part of the stay. 2. Facilities - Love the view, the Forest trail and the fireside Marshmellow bbq in the evening. 3. Food - Great food. Tried the Pasta of the day and Shinshu Beef. We usually have Kobe beef and the texture and the taste of the Shinshu Beef is excellent. Bread was excellent as well. Sangria is my favorite 4. Room - very clean. Hot tub is large with water from Ueno. Amenities like coffee, tea, juices are sufficient and good quality. 5. Location - great view and fresh air. Note that the hotel is far from Karuizawa. We book this hotel with that in mind, so we had spend 3 days in Karuizawa before arriving. Mainly stayed in the hotel area for our stay. Overall love this hotel. Exceeded expectations

Great hotel only minutes from Nagano Station. The Onsen on the 11th floor was fantastic and has both indoor and outdoor baths all free to use by guests. The staff are helpful and friendly and the breakfast buffet which included tempura prawns was very good. There is a free coffee and juice station in the foyer and a seven eleven next door. Perfect.

Stayed here for 6 nights for a ski holiday and we had to change room half way through as I booked late and they were fully booked. Lovely staff they moved our stuff to the new room which meant we could go out for the day to enjoy skiing. Location isn't in the centre of town which wasn't a problem. There is a shuttle bus to the ski resorts, if you don't have a car. We did have a car which made it really easy. Onsen was lovely after a full day's of skiing. There was a ski rental shop opposite the hotel which was convent. We had breakfast and dinner included one of the waitresses called June was super friendly and very welcoming. Was a joy to see her everyday.

It’s clean, very well equipped with heater, cooking utensils. The owners are so nice and friendly. Language may be a barrier but they tried really hard to accommodate all our needs. The place is slightly secluded which is perfect for quiet vacation but you can still go to town centre by just taking 1 train to Karuizawa station and the owners are nice enough to drop and pick you!

My family and I went there to have a short vacation during our long weekend holiday. The surroundings were quiet and beautiful. I saw some deer during my morning walk in the forest. The skies looked amazing at night. If you are tired of the hustle and bustle in the city, it’s a great place to get yourself refreshed. Hope we have a chance to visit there again.

A nice and quiet city with a lot to offer. A good base for a day trip to Kamikochi which is a fantastic hiking place. Driving around the city is nice with alps on the backdrop. Matsumoto city alps park is a great place for activities and hangout. Tower of beauty has fantastic mountain views and panoramic scenery. Visit the wasabi farm for interesting and nice wasabi products. Last but not least, the beautiful Matsumoto castle, which will light up at night.

Karuizawa is our perfect place in Japan.

Karuizawa is our perfect place in Japan. Everytime we are in Tokyo, or near Tokyo, we make sure we stay at least a night here. Just walking along the old Nakasendo street is perfect for us. An old quiet town with the calmest vibe. Definitely, we will be back.

The monkeys are marvellous.

The monkeys are marvellous. Of course they are attracted to the valley by the food they receive regularly but they are totally free to come and go. So entertaining and endearing to observe how they interact. The park was created in 1964. Beautiful forest in a mountainous area that grows apples, peaches and grapes and lots of vegetables. Pay attention to the hotel you choose. Avoid Hotel Housei.

Anise Gardens is well located for access to the Shionomichi trail. All 4 of us are 70+, so we’re not so keen on long multi-day treks. However, by staying several days in one place, we were able to use train into & out of Hakuba and wait for THE best day to take the gondola & chairlifts up to the Mountain where we walked in fresh snow & saw Happo-Ike reflections at their very best.

I went to Nagano to do historical research at three separate facilities about an hours drive from central Nagano City. -- My main objective was visiting the Underground Imperial Headquarters 松代大本営地下壕 (松代象山地下壕) at Matsushiro. The tunnel system is impressive, and the museum next to it adds a lot of background. -- I visited the Hijiri Aviation Museum 聖博物館 in Omi, which displays items and posters full of info about its past as a stop for those on the way to Zenkoji Temple in Nagano City, as well as having a few combat aircraft and a main gun from the Japanese Battleship Mutsu. In an out-of-the-way place. -- I also went to the Mugonkan 戦没画学生慰霊美術館 無言館 in Ueda City. A very somber place since it introduces Japanese artists (showing a couple of their paintings) who died during the war years. Also in a rather remote location. It's unfortunate that all three have signs and displays that are almost exclusively in Japanese. Non-Japanese speakers who are interested in World War II history and happen to be near Nagano may still get something out of a self-tour of the tunnel system in Matsushiro, which is interesting to see in person (and cool in summer). The Wikipedia entry for it seems accurate, much more than you can find on site in English. Be aware that cameras are allowed at Hijiri, but cannot be used in the Mugonkan and in the Matsushiro museum (the tunnels are okay). I don't recommend taking kids to any of these sites.

Always have a pleasant stay (our third time here) except for some rains and weather is not predictable. We have a scenic drive around the area (if autumn leaves turned red), nice onsen nearby, would love to hike around but not lately due to bear attack. Definitely will return before we would be too old to drive here as foreigners.
