- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.2Superb - What previous guests thought, 170 reviewsThe Ryokan is so much better than we expected with a very reasonable price. I was staying for my Kumano Kodo dual pilgrim walk together with a friend, and could simply take bus back and forth to where I paused, very convenient location. The hotel has a long history but still kept very clean. The onsen was fantastic, with large pools both indoor and outdoor; also male and female were switched every day at 10pm so you can experience different setup for an overnight stay. Liked the dinner and breakfast: they changed menu for my two-night stay. Hopefully can have more choices on sake and fruit wine. Above average English skill with all super nice local staff. They’re the reason I would definitely choose to stay again next time after all!Guest review byHANXIAHong Kong
- From US$325.42 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.4Very good - What previous guests thought, 1,827 reviewsIt feels like time froze at this hotel and it’s so fun. We had a Japanese-style room at the top floor, overlooking the ocean and that view is really the highlight, I could just stare at it all day. The staff were kind and helpful, the cave onsen were brilliant and somehow not crowded. We had easy parking right next to our building. Having a car allowed us to go out for dinners, otherwise I think this might be difficult if you only rely on the hotel’s transport. Oh and that random escalator system that takes you to the top of the hill (great views) is so random.Guest review byZsuzsannaDenmark
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.6Exceptional - What previous guests thought, 325 reviewsI enjoyed it a lot! The host is fantastic with a good sense of humor. We really enjoyed the stay there! The food was fantastic. They made perfect adjustments for my food because of my allergy. The view is perfect, we enjoyed the nice pink sunset while having dinner. The homemade plum wine is nice too! Just can’t have enough. After a long day walk, this hotel has everything that I need and surprised me with its warm and friendly staff and high standards.Guest review byYutingChina
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.1Superb - What previous guests thought, 64 reviewsThe staff came to pick us up at Hashimoto station mid-afternonn because it's really remote from anything and they dropped us at Koyasan the next day. We should have stayed for 2 nights instead of 1 because there is a lot to see in Koya san. The staff was extremely helpful and patient with us. They really took good care of us. The food was amazing ! They even adjusted to my seafood allergy. Thank you for your warm welcome !Guest review byLaurieFrance

The scenic mountains near the city offers stunning sunset views. The Sakura were in full bloom. There are several parks around the city, and the impressive Wakayama castle. The hotel (Candeo Hotels Nankai) is great value - fantastic river views, rooftop onsen that you can enjoy the sunset. And right at the Wakayama Station. Good dining options around the hotel too.Guest review byKwokSingapore - 10.0

We are Americans so we had really little knowledge of Shirahama as a resort city. It was at the tail end of a 3 week tour of Japan and was very restful. Fortunately, we were there after Golden Week and before the main tourist season, so it was quiet and relaxing. We had fun over two nights at a local Turkish restaurant, Blue Bar. We'd recommend it. Also, the beach seemed quite nice although we had one day or rain so we didn't hang out there. While this wouldn't be a regular stop for Americans, I think it is worthwhile and an easy train ride to the airport in Osaka.Guest review byAndrew - 10.0

There was a quaint cafe/sweet shop within walking distance that we fell in love with. They served amazing coffee in hand made cups and had the most delightful assortment of sweets and lollies - even Halloween sweetsGuest review byEleiseAustralia - 10.0

Koyasan is a historic, spiritual, naturally beautiful location. The ability to be around active temples and attend fire ceremony was unforgettable. The information center and excellent bus system made it easy to navigate. However, if you like to walk, most sights are easily walked to, as it is quite flat. There were several nice coffee houses and the place that offers night tours of Okunoin also is a bar in the evening, serving excellent local craft beers. A surprise.Guest review byBarbaraUnited States - 10.0

Hongu, Watarase, Kawayu & the surrounding area is hands down one of THE almighty best in Japan — and Japan has lots of amazing places. it's very easy to spend 3 days or more based out of this area & then driving around to amazing waterfalls, ravines, hot springs, cultural spots, mountain vistas, abandoned elementary school, etc. etc. unbeaten japan can take you there so do not hesitate to reach out.Guest review bylawrence of osakaJapan - 10.0

I spent one night in Kii-Katsuura after walking the Kumano Koda Daimon-Zaka section up to the Nachisan shrine and waterfall. It is a four hour train ride from Osaka but we’ll worth it to see this beautiful area in Japan. Just to warn you, the iconic red pagoda near the waterfall is currently being restored and is covered in tarpaulin until early next year. Katsuura is a sleepy fishing and onsen town. Visit the fishery on the port at 7am to see the daily tuna auction. A great experience is bathing in the cave onsen at Hotel Urashima on an Island five minutes by ferry from Katsuura.Guest review byAnonymousAustralia - 8.0

Shingu is a small coastal town with few hills which is a wonderful to find after 10 days hiking on the mountainous Kumano Kodo pilgrimage walks. One of the 3 Great Shrines is here and very accessible whether walking or driving. Getting to and from Shingu is very easy with the train station and bus station being together in the center of town. It is a good base for reaching the other 2 Great Shrines of the Kumano Kodo at Hongu and Nachisan. There are a number of good eateries in the town but one of the joys was just wandering down laneways and discovering little gems not listed in the usual guides.Guest review byJimAustralia - 10.0

This is a very peaceful little town on the southeast coast of Kii Peninsula. The residents and store clerks are mostly senior citizens but they are polite and pleasant to meet. It’s the gateway to the Nashi area and the famous Kumano Kodo historical trail. You can also rent a bike at the Information Center next to the JR Kii Katsuura Station to quickly circle around town.Guest review byKuangYuTaiwan - 10.0

Wakayama has a wonderful castle and museum that was sparsely attended. It was a nice change to have the place to yourself so you could take your time at the exhibits. We chose to come here as the city was close to Kansai Airport for our return flight. We did not explore the regional trails which I believe are wonderful. If only visiting the city, a stay of 2 days is sufficient.Guest review byBlatchfordAustralia
