What a find, the house had been moved 220km to this amazing plot. It was previously a nunnery and all those features had been retained, so the wood and feel of the property was extremely relaxing. The grounds included a railway carriage you could stay in, a wooden boat, carousel, a little lake with a fountain, swings, rocking seats, huge bee structure, the most amazing glass summerhouse with table tennis facilities and outside seating. Kym was the most amazing host, nothing was too much. She arranged our Milford Sound trip on Cruise Milford and recommended the time we should leave and stop off points on route. What I have not mentioned is that the lounge as free beer, wine, tea, coffee and cookies. What more could you want. Breakfast included everything you could want from continental to cooked, selection of juices and tea and coffee. One night we decided to stay in and Kym let us use the kitchen to cook dinner for ourselves and one other guest that we met. Felt very sad to leave and would differently recommend and go back if we can.

We felt very welcome and cared for. I wished we'd planned to stay longer. I was thrilled with the loan of a coat for the Milford Sound trip, which made the difference. The proximity to restaurants and shops was great. The restaurant recommendation was perfect. I loved the town and the hotel.

Lovely little township as a launch to the great walks in the district. Very tourist friendly and easy to get around with a great variety of restaurants and shops , including supermarkets and adventure clothing stores. Beautiful snow capped mountains and gorgeous spring days in November.

Worst motel we stayed in in the entire New Zealand trip of 1...

Worst motel we stayed in in the entire New Zealand trip of 1 month. Liked · The view over the lake - NOTHING about the facility. Disliked · The room was very old and dated, wallpaper peeling off walls, a single bed sheet on a double bed, linen was grey coloured and felt grotty. The 2 chairs were sagging in the middle, one chair at a desk, 1 coffee mug, 2 cups and 1 saucer, 3 wine glasses none matching - 1 was a 1950s glass, fridge was not turned on - 1 bowl and 1 spoon. No milk and 2 tea bags. The bathroom was terrible, both the vanity basin and toilet bowl ceramics were so old they were crazed, the shower over an old bath with no rails to hold to get in and out of. To top it off 3 dead blow flies in the vanity cupboards. The roof of the verandah threatened to blow off and kept us awake wondering most of the night! The staff were backpackers and couldn't have been less helpful. The restaurant and bar are closed. I would never stay there again! All this for AUD $185 grossly over priced for the facility.

We drove our hire car from Queenstown and stayed just the one night as we had a Tour booked the next day on the boat. We enjoyed the drive and the stunning scenery on our trip to Milford Sound; however, if you are short on time, you can FLY straight out and do the Boat cruise in half a day. If you drive down- it's an ALL-DAY event and that is why we opted to stay overnight and travel back to Queenstown the next day. There is only a CAFE in the town for quick food and coffee etc... There were limited places to pull up on the trip to have a meal. Lots of scenery and a long drive but enjoyable if you like car trips?

The obvious starting point for your Milford Sound experience., Te Anau has the look, feel & scenic beauty of a Canadian Great Lakes Town but all set in Southern New Zealand. Te Anau is surrounded in Alps & beautiful Blue Lakes making the scenery very easy to digest. There's everything you need here in the shape of accommodation, bars/Pubs, restaurants, shopping, supermarkets etc. Chill out for a few days of Te Anau tranquility before taking on the crowds & traffic nonsense of Milford Sound.

Tranquil town away from the touristy hubbub of Te Anau but within range to catch the tour to Milford Sound. The Church restaurant served excellent meals at a reasonable price. Probably best suited to tours to Doubtful Sounds, but we did not mind the 20 minute drive to Te Anau.

Staying in the Sound is special - it is a very short drive (minutes) to the cruise departure points. It's about 2 hours drive otherwise from the closest town to the national park. You are immersed in the environment and you need to be flexible in regards to weather - we had several road closures (can't leave the park), rain and significant snow fall at the Homer tunnel area. The Lodge did a good job of communicating the various conditions.
