We had an absolutely amazing stay! The location offers breathtaking views, making it the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The peaceful and serene atmosphere allowed us to truly unwind and relax. One of the highlights was the variety of friendly pets and farm animals. We loved interacting with them, and you have the option to feed the farm animals—it was such a wholesome experience. The host was fantastic, with great communication from start to finish, making sure everything was perfect for our stay. If you’re looking for a quiet getaway surrounded by nature, animals, and stunning scenery, this is the place to be. Highly recommended, and we can’t wait to visit again!

As you can see on their account, they said that they are a “pet-friendly”. Before we went to the property, I called them and I talked to a lady, informing that we have a “tea cup size dog”. And when we arrived at the property, they moved us in a smaller (to which we did not booked) and they charged us for a R100 for bringing a pet. But, as I checked their account, “you can bring pet with no extra charge”. They giving a misleading information. And the old man is very rude to my husband, the moment he saw my husband carrying our dog he says with a rude approach “so what you gonna do now, we do not allow pet! So what you gonna do?” Also, I think we are a victim of racism.

I usually stay over in Bloemfontein when returning from the...

I usually stay over in Bloemfontein when returning from the Cape on my way back to Johannesburg. It is ideally suited for stay-overs en route to holiday destinations but I realise Bloem has much more to offer. The quality of the roads was unfortunately shocking in places with its abundance of potholes but I guess that is also true of my hometown, Johannesburg.

We were disappointed with the shops.

We were disappointed with the shops. We would have loved more quality arts and craft by local artists. The glass was absent that we saw on our previous visits. It seems as though Clarence caters more for the drinking crowd. Although it make sense for profit we would hate to see the art go to waste.

Harrismith is a very very cold place in, winter.

Harrismith is a very very cold place in, winter. Whilst the location and everything in the cottage was excellent, we could not enjoy the stay due to the cold and no heaters. If it's specified that there will be no heaters in winter and no fans in summer, then either we carry our own heaters or fans, or look for, alternate accommodation. The roads in Harrismith are terrible.

Had a private little well maintained garden with private seating area to sit outside and enjoy the garden. Premises is well secured with electric gate, security camera's and security gates. Room is nice and spacious with a lot of cupboard space. TV is nice and big. Kitchen has a kettle, fridge and a microwave. Nice coffee, sugar, milk, water and biscuits was in the room. Nice size basin to wash up in with dishwash soap. Just needed a kitchen cloth and towel. Space was well utilized for the layout of the room, kitchen and shower. Hosts were very accommodating and friendly. Overall, comfortable and felt safe.

Internet signal was spasmodic in Unit 6, but manageable. Rustiq Restaurant was a good suggestion. Great place to break the long-haul trips. The staff were great and the welcome right up there. Will be back.

If you are planning to hike the Tugela Falls and want to start early, I highly recommend staying at the lodge for the night. We had a warm welcome, a clean room and a breakfast buffet. There is free parking on site.

The Retief Guest Farm is outside Kroonstad and off the N1 making it convenient to find. Our brief visit to the town was not an experience that I would recommend, the roads are in poor repair, and signage to orderly shopping centers difficult to find.

Our host was friendly, however the condition of the cottage was concerning. During a storm, the roof leaked onto the bed, which was unsafe and forced us to change sleeping arrangements. There was mold on the decor, the bathtub was inconsistent, the stove did not function correctly, and the windows let in cold drafts. These issues significantly affected our comfort and did not align with the reviews.
