We had high expectations given other good comments, but Tai and his family definitely exceeded them. The place in itself is a beautiful, wooden Japanese-style house with garden. Rooms are cozy and comfortable. Shower is great including water. What I loved the most is how thoughtful the decoration is, with small objects, books and artifacts in every room which make the atmosphere unique. Japanese breakfast is included and it was delicious. Location is 15 minutes from city center but you won’t even notice given Tai and his family will pick you up and leave you at the station. In our case, because we were planning to explore the city in the afternoon, they even left us in town in the morning, kept our luggage and brought it to the station later. As cherry on the top, if you are a foreigner, Tai speaks perfect English! He also made sure to make dinner reservations for us, which is not easy to do without speaking Japanese.

Reopened after renovation in 2022, Auberge Hidanomori is situated in quiet hills, a 10-minute shuttle ride from JR Takayama Station.

Auberge Hidanomori is one of the gems of Takayama. It is a fantastic property, with beautiful rooms and 2 private onsens. Very friendly/helpful staff, and the meals were some of the best we had in Japan. Fantastic pairings!
