This is my 3rd visits to Takayama this year during different seasons and this trip is mainly as a base for visiting Kamikochi. I booked this inn away from city center to experience the hospitality of a small family-run inn and the dining experience with wine pairing. Auberge Hida no Mori didn't disappoint 🙏🤗

Guests can request relaxing massage treatments or soak in the indoor and outdoor hot-spring baths, which are made of rocks and cypress wood. Everything! This was the most beautiful ryokan with wonderful staff who were welcoming and attentive throughout our stay. We had breakfast and dinner in our room and they were both superb - beautifully presented, exceptional tastes and served gracefully by the staff. A true delight! The amenities were comfortable and the onsen beautiful with both indoor and outdoor baths. The hospitality of Ryokan Tanabe is exceptional - if you are looking for a great ryokan experience I highly recommend staying here.

Great location being right in the centre of the old town. Rooms a decent size but sadly felt the beds too hard and uncomfortable. The staff were so lovely and helpful and we especially enjoyed the onsen experience which was super clean and relaxing.
Good location, close to the station and the old town. Bikes to hire for free. Jacuzzi and steam room were nice to relax in. Room was clean with all the necessary facilities.
Very stylish hotel. The staff were very helpful and welcoming. On arrival, the valet helped with our luggage, showed me where to park (we convoyed to it) and gave me a lift back to the hotel. The room was very spacious (the most spacious one we had in the 3 weeks we were in Japan). They did free drinks in the evening and have a lovely lounge space to relax in.
Lovely hotel overlooking Gero Onsen. We had only booked bed and breakfast, and our rooms were well appointed and spacious, with views overlooking Gero. The Japanese breakfast was plentiful and good quality. The public Onsen had inside and outside pools which were spacious and relaxing, and very quiet when we visited. There is also a spacious bar, where you can use the Karaoke. The service throughout our stay was excellent.
An amazing traditional guesthouse in the heart of Magome, right on the Nakasendo. It was exceptionally clean and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Our host was lovely, spoke excellent English and was very thoughtful (made us a dinner booking at a nearby restaurant which was the best meal we've had in Japan). Our beds were comfortable, it was well-appointed and we had a perfect, relaxing night there.
When we arrived we were met by the lovely owner who showed us around the place. I don't know if they had a cancellation, but we got upgraded to our own little hut separated from the main house, with private bathroom, living room and upstairs bedroom. They have two outdoor private onsens with breathtaking views of the mountains. We had their dinner and breakfast option and it was absolutely supreme!
Dinner and breakfast were generous, tasty, authentic and diverse. The design was traditional, warm and very pretty. Amazin private Onsen - taking a bath in the snow was a unique experience. The overall vibe was relaxing and romantic.
Everything was incredible. The room with the Mountain View was beautiful. I spent so much time in the open air bath and it was so relaxing. The Kaiseki meals were some of the best and most authentic meals I ever had. The staff is so lovely too. Every detail was perfect, down to them waving goodbye to us as we left. Highly recommend!!!
Everything! The big, Japanese style room had a gorgeous view. The whole place was very atmospheric with lots of small nieches to relax. They have both public and private baths, and the ones we tried were lovely. The private baths cannot be reserved, but we always found at least one available. The staff was super friendly and helpful despite a slight language barrier (my Japanese is rather weak). Dinner and breakfast were plentiful, interesting and delicious. Easy to reach by bus from Takayama.
