Located a 5-minute drive from Gero Station, Kawakamiya Kasuitei offers traditional Japanese-style guestrooms featuring tatami (woven straw) flooring and hot spring baths in the Gero Onsen area. Excellent reception, very friendly staff, nice rooms and great dinner

Located in 15-minute bus ride from JR Takayama Station, Guest House & Cafe SOY is surrounded by lush greenery. Free WIFi is provided and free private parking is available on site. Was the best japanese experience that we have on our trip. The house is very traditional and beatiful, they have also a nice garden. And the best thing was Tai and his family that take care of us, they were very kind, prepared the best japanese breakfast and help us with everything.

Reopened after renovation in 2022, Auberge Hidanomori is situated in quiet hills, a 10-minute shuttle ride from JR Takayama Station. Everything was extraordinarily well handled. Dinner and breakfast were phenomenal. The staff was extremely friendly and spoke good english. There is an impressive wine collection and a very knowlegeable owner to cater to your tastes during dinner. The surrounding area is very calm and close to the forest for some serene walking in the morning. Probably the best place i have stayed in my month of traveling in Japan.

Located just a 1-minute walk from popular Miyagawa Morning Market in the heart of Takayama, Sumiyoshi Ryokan offers homely Japanese-style accommodation in the historic townhouse building. Hosts are incredibly kind and gave us a warm welcome. The ryokan is very traditional. The japanese breakfast was amazing and we regret not to have booked the diner (it has to be 3 days in advance and when we saw how the breakfast was made we understood why, so make sure to book it). Location is very close to shops and restaurants. If you have a car, the host will guide you to parking spaces in the adjacent street. The ryokan has 2 onsen like baths shared among customers. Note: there are no private shower or toilet in the rooms.

Located on a hill and overlooking the famous Gero hot-spring area, Yunoshimakan, founded in 1931, offers large public indoor hot spring baths and open-air hot spring baths. I love the traditional room, the futon was so comfortable. The view was amazing! My entire stay was so comfortable. The public bath onsen was amazing. The staff were great too! I left my jacket upon check-out, upon calling them they were able to give it back to me in Gero station. Shuttle service is so convenient. The shoes clerk was very attentive, he was very nice. I love my entire stay. You basically pay for history and view, I would say it is worth it. Stay at least 2 nights!

Set amid a beautiful landscape in Okuhida Onsengo hot-spring area, Yamazatonoiori Soene offers beautiful rooms in a Japanese style with river or garden views. This place was incredible. I cannot write enough good things about it! The service was above and beyond (even relative to the generally high standard in Japan). The food was delicious and plentiful, and the whole place was so serene. There are three onsen options - a "regular" public one, three private ones on a first-come-first-serve bases, and an outdoor public one with incredible views of a waterfall. We visited all three and all were great. We never had trouble getting one of the private ones when we wanted to, and the others weren't crowded either. The staff and waiters were very helpful and accomodating, and the whole experience was thoroughly relaxing. Worth noting that a short walk (maybe 5 minutes) from the hotel is the start of a hiking trail with amazing views (a good way to fill the time between soaks ;) ).

Located in the centre of Takayama Historic District, Ryokan Tanabe 旅館田邊 is one of the most historical ryokans in the city. It features Japanese-style rooms and free WiFi in all areas. everything was perfect and exciting. if I can suggest a small "sweet" breakfast for western tourists :)
