Hongu
J-Hoppers Kumano Yunomine Guesthouse is situated in Hongu, a 10-minute drive away or a 70-minute walk on the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Route from Kumano Hongu Taisha Grand Shrine.
This guesthouse is located along one of the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Routes and Yunomine Hot Spring, said to be one of the oldest hot springs baths in Japan, is a 5-minute walk from the property.
Has everything you could possibly ask for. Rooms are very comfortable, there are plenty of toilets, bathroom facilities, so no waiting time. The showers come with small onsen, every one of which is uniquely pretty. There are large common areas, which are very social. We even got invited to join the owners steam pot party one evening.
Koyasan
A 1000 year-old Buddhist temple, Shukubo Koya-san Eko-in offers Japanese-style accommodation, a beautiful garden and free WiFi. Guests are free to attend Buddhist morning services, the Goma fire ritual and meditation. Everything about our stay was fantastic! The room was absolutely fabulous, and we were delighted to receive an upgrade. Having our own private onsen-style facility in the bathroom made the experience truly special. The monk staff were incredibly gracious, friendly, and always ready to help.
Koyasan
Located in Koyasan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, 高野山 宿坊 常喜院 -Koyasan Shukubo Jokiin- offers free private parking.
All rooms include a flat-screen TV. Certain rooms have a seating area where you can relax. Rooms have a shared bathroom. 高野山 宿坊 常喜院 -Koyasan Shukubo Jokiin- features free WiFi throughout the property.
Sleeping in the temple is a beautiful experience. It combines the facilities of a nice accommodation with the opportunity to participate in the morning prayers and eating vegetarian food. The room vas very spacious and with two heaters which kept the room temperature comfortable. Outside our room was cold since it was snowing.
Shirahama Onsen, Shirahama
In a prime location in the Shirahama Onsen district of Shirahama, Dormitory Sandanya Guesthouse is located 2.4 km from Shirarahama Beach, 1.8 km from Kishu Museum of Art and 2 km from Heisogen Park. Free private parking is available and the guest house also provides bike hire for guests who want to explore the surrounding area.
There is a snack bar on-site. The guest house is located in a geothermal area, with a number of hot springs nearby for guests to relax in.
Nice place and staff. The owner make sure you have everything you need. You have a towel free of charge and a lot of cheap food (snacks, drinks, food cheaper than konbini) you can buy. A manga reading corner has (almost?) all Naruto, SnK and One Piece mangas so manga readers can look forward to it.
Tanabe
Hotel Kirinosato Takahara features outdoor and indoor hot spring baths, only a 2-minute walk from the World Heritage Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Routes. It offers free Wi-Fi throughout the property, a terrace and rooms with a Japanese interior and Western beds. I seldom rate a 10 but Kirinosato Takahara deserves it hands down! No wonder it’s not easy to get a room here, because it always got booked out. There’s a lot of passion and heart put by the whole team led by Jian into making guests feel happy and comfortable - from the hospitality, attention to details, great food (muy delicioso!) and ambiance. The onsen is clean and of hotel standard. It’s not cheap to stay here but I got my money worth and more!
Koyasan
Located in the sacred Mount Koya area, 高野山 宿坊 桜池院 -Koyasan Shukubo Yochiin- is a historic temple and an accommodation for visitors. Just to the left of entering sanmon gate, there is a stone garden created by the famous Mirei Shigemori and designated a natural monument by the Japanese government. Beautiful and unforgettable experience. The Monks staff very kind, they accept tourist into their world. The vegetarian food (no meat, no fish, no onion, no garlic) was delicious. We are honoured to be part their buddhist ceremony in the morning. Thank you for everything.

The place is clean and cozy, satisfies every need a hiker may have. A natural hot spring just at the door, providing an incredibly unique experience of soaking in the wonder of nature while steps away from your base. The host is very helpful and offered some extra help regarding my luggage shuttle which I was struggling to sort out. He speaks fluent English.

The traditional rooms at Yunominesou Ryokan have sliding paper screens, floor cushions and Japanese futon bedding on a tatami (woven-straw) floor. Great ryukan , Best feeling to take a full rest here after days on a trail, Onsen water in this area is one of the best I have experienced in japan. Located in the sacred Koyasan area, Saizenin offers simple accommodation surrounded by mountains and many temples. Originally developed as a lodging for the temples’ pilgrims, it conducts Buddhist services every morning that guests can attend. Nankai Koyasan Train Station is a 15-minute drive away. Beautiful shukubo in Koyasan. The temple is across from the Konpon Daito Pagoda, easy to reach from the bus stop. The breakfast and dinner were very nice and delicious. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The facilities were spotless and really clean. Our room had a view of the garden which made it feel very calm and peaceful. This is one of our favorite accommodations in Japan!

Stayed in the Luxury Suite with garden view as part of a joint honeymoon/birthday treat and wow, what an experience! The suite was absolutely stunning, the food was beautifully presented and getting to experience the meditation and fire ritual made this a unique stay, and one we will both treasure for years to come.
Giovanni and Yutaka are lovely kind people, we have never met more hospitality. You feel completely at home, but then with the most delicious dinner and breakfast. What a talented cooks both Giovanni and Yutaka are. What a nice place to stay. Although most travellers choose to stay only one night during the Kumado Kodo hike, we highly recommend staying more nights to relax and enjoy the beautifull place, food, goats and hospitality.
The staff, firstly. A bit of a language barrier but so helpful. The guesthouse is just lovely. You get a real rustic feel. Extra padded mattresses too. There is an onsen on site and, you can book to have a traditional Japanese breakfast too. Be sure to visit the owner’s restaurant next door. The tuna is epic! We enjoyed 2 nights here to see Nachi Katsuura waterfall and we loved the sleepy town. You’ll have a relaxed stay here.
I really enjoyed the one night I had there as a chance to feel relaxed in a lovely traditional Japanese home. Tanabe seemed like a cool town too. The owner pointed out some good dinner options which didn't disappoint either!
Lovely staff, welcoming and eager to help, providing excellent service. The hotel has a romantic old-timer vibe, yet the facilities are in good condition. The outdoor bath was beautiful in the morning with the fresh sea breeze and outstanding view, and the breakfast was exceptional. Would stay again!
Beautiful atmosphere - very relaxing. Great room, Lovely mat house. Nice garden.
The hotel is near to the beach, it has a lovely swimming pool outside. There is a great viewing area on the 11th floor where you can sit and relax looking out to the sea and on the same floor there are male and female Onsens. There was a wide variety of food at breakfast. The room with tatami area was very nice. Good size gym and laundry room.
Really magical experience. The monks are lovely, food is great and the meditation relaxing. We’d come here again in a heart beat. Incredibly good English spoken too!
great location to relax after your first day on the trail and very friendly host. after staying in cities, this place is a refreshing change a pace, overlooking rice fields without anything going on around you (other than some lovely fireflies buzzing around in the evening). would stay again
The owners were very warm and friendly , the couple offered home made dinner and breakfast for us. On the last day of our stay , they even provided a lovely Japanese lunch box for our long day hiking. We had to leave very early that day and they woke up at 5 ish in the morning to prepare the breakfast and lunch box. We were also honoured to celebrate their 4-year anniversary on one evening with sake and a big feast. All the best to Kohei san and his family🙏
