Both dinner and breakfast offered at the Honbako restaurant were delicious and showcased local ingredients. Room and outdoor bath were well-appointed, and 24-hour access to the bookstore is a treat and even includes a selection of art/English books for foreign guests.

Excellent traditional ryokan run by a family for 4 generations. As a guest you are cared for with great attention even if you do not speak perfect Japanese. The most amazing and delicious dinner and rice wine we had in Japan, all cooked by the owner's family and carefully served. Even Madame owner came to greet us personally at the dinner. The rooms are neat, in traditional Japanese style with futons and excellent tea. The owner gave us a ride to the train station when we were leaving and we had a pleasant chat. Thank you for this memorable experience.

One of the best hotels I have ever stayed at. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, everything was perfect and I can't think of one thing that we would have changed. The service from the staff was definitely the highlight, but the food, the room and the onsen were outstanding. It's a short busride to Kamikochi bridge where the hiking is beautiful.

Such warm welcoming service! From door to dinning to check out despite being such a big establishment! Better than a more exepnsive boutique ryokan that we had stayed the night before at Hirayu onsen. Staff are proficient in English and the place was run very efficiently with great service. Resel from the dinning area deserves special mention for his excellent service! Public onsens were big and we also liked the private paid onsen ( the room waa very spacious and amenities were well stocked, even a ( massage chair. Better than other private and paid onses that we have tried ) Hotel is on a hill with good views of matsumoto city. We enjoyed dinner and the top up for the wine sampler, and breakfast buffet was fantastic. Excellent value for money

The family who own and run the ryokan are delightful - welcoming and very helpful. I stayed here 15 years ago and they continue to run an exceptional traditional-style inn, if anything it has improved over the years. The updated onsen is a lovely feature. The breakfasts are delicious. Relatively easy walking distance to the “National Treasure” which is the castle of Matsumoto-Jo and to the superb modern art museum; easy bus ride to/from the rail station.

This was the most wonderful place we stayed in our month in Japan. Three nights of keiseki dinners, each better than the last. We had a huge comfy tatami room, the onsen were fab, the staff were incredibly kind, dropping us into town each day and collecting us in the afternoon, making it easy to enjoy marvellous Matsumoto. Totally recommend it to anyone who wants a homely feeling ryokan with top end food.

It‘s a really authentic Onsen-experience. We were the only non-Japanese at this place. Our room was a traditional room with tatami-mattresses. In the family room 3 slept on futons, 2 in beds. It‘s half-board. In the evening we had a 10 course menu in a private room. Although we had an English menu we were overwhelmed the first time with how to eat what and what needs to be cooked and what not

Had a great stay here and truly enjoyed the whole Ryokan experience. Staff was extremely hospitable. Thee traditional room and futons were comfy (though the duvet was a bit warm). The onsen was perfect and the dinner an breakfast were truly Japanese and all very good. Even though there are some language barriers, they did their utmost best to explain things, where needed with help from a translation app.
