I recently had an incredible stay at Matsumoto Jujo, and I can confidently say it ranks among the best experiences I've ever had. With its breathtaking scenery of asama onsen area and exceptional service, Matsumoto Jujo is undeniably wonderful. Upon arriving at the Oyaki and Coffee reception area, I was immediately welcomed by the warm and friendly staff, who greeted me with refreshing drinks. They serve excellent coffee, hojicha, and oyaki, which are traditional snacks from Nagano. The reception itself beautifully merges modern design with traditional elements, and the staff shared that the building was originally a geisha space, now tastefully renovated into a cafe. They provided an illustrated map of the facilities and nearby cultural sites that was both artistic and easy to navigate. The soothing background music in the cafe added to the overall ambiance. I stayed in a standard twin room in the Honbako building, which exuded a unique atmosphere by combining industrial and vintage styles. The room featured a private onsen on the balcony, offering the perfect opportunity for relaxation at any time. Outside the room, I discovered complimentary snacks, juice, and tea. Inside, the amenities were top-notch, including a Nescafe coffee machine and a tumbler as a thoughtful guest souvenir. The handwritten welcome message from the hotel truly stood out as a personal touch. As a book lover and architecture enthusiast, I was thrilled to find the library at Matsumoto Jujo. It boasts a fantastic collection of books and a beautiful interior. The unique concept of the library, along with clear signage, made it easy to navigate the hotel and enjoy everything it offers. Both dinner and breakfast were outstanding, featuring carefully crafted dishes. The staff were attentive to dietary restrictions and allergies. As a lacto-ovo vegetarian, I appreciated their diligence in confirming my food preferences multiple times.

It’s a smaller hotel with a few rooms, a dining room and an onsen. There is a parking available, so it’s very easy to come there by car. The food is delicious and there’s a lot of it! The owner is very friendly and helpful with choosing things to do nearby. She made sure that our toddler has also slippers and even made her small portions to eat with us.

Shoho was an amazing experience. We had a family room with a private onsen/bath. I used the bath 2-3 times a day, and found it very restorative. The food was absolutely outstanding. We ate breakfast here, and also did 1 dinner as well. The dinner, despite being several courses, was modified to fit my severe food allergy. The way they accommodated my allergy made me feel quite special. Like I said, the food was outstanding, it was so incredibly delicious.

The family who own and run the ryokan are delightful - welcoming and very helpful. I stayed here 15 years ago and they continue to run an exceptional traditional-style inn, if anything it has improved over the years. The updated onsen is a lovely feature. The breakfasts are delicious. Relatively easy walking distance to the “National Treasure” which is the castle of Matsumoto-Jo and to the superb modern art museum; easy bus ride to/from the rail station.

This was the most wonderful place we stayed in our month in Japan. Three nights of keiseki dinners, each better than the last. We had a huge comfy tatami room, the onsen were fab, the staff were incredibly kind, dropping us into town each day and collecting us in the afternoon, making it easy to enjoy marvellous Matsumoto. Totally recommend it to anyone who wants a homely feeling ryokan with top end food.

Onsen Yado Misuzuso is good value to stay in the mountains near Kamikochi. We stayed in a beautiful tatami room with yukatas provided to wear to the baths. The baths at this onsen smell really strongly of sulfur, be warned. There’s a lovely tiny restaurant Iodori located right next door so we could just walk over for dinner. The staff were really kind.

It‘s a really authentic Onsen-experience. We were the only non-Japanese at this place. Our room was a traditional room with tatami-mattresses. In the family room 3 slept on futons, 2 in beds. It‘s half-board. In the evening we had a 10 course menu in a private room. Although we had an English menu we were overwhelmed the first time with how to eat what and what needs to be cooked and what not

Had a great stay here and truly enjoyed the whole Ryokan experience. Staff was extremely hospitable. Thee traditional room and futons were comfy (though the duvet was a bit warm). The onsen was perfect and the dinner an breakfast were truly Japanese and all very good. Even though there are some language barriers, they did their utmost best to explain things, where needed with help from a translation app.
