Guests at Jizokan Matsuya Ryokan stay in rooms with shoji paper screens and traditional futon bedding. All rooms are air-conditioned and include a TV and slippers. Best location we stayed at in a 2 week holiday in Japan. The other hotels we used were all conventional ones and we wanted to stay in at least on Ryokan and chose this one. The location is perfect, really close to Zenkoji Temple which is the most historic area in Nagano, with lots of really nice shops to explore. The room was perfect and we really enjoyed the traditional Japanese breakfast

At the ryokan, the units include bed linen and towels. Beautiful renovated ryokan well located in the city. Very traditional but with modern comforts. Excellent traditional breakfast available. Lovely woman running the ryokan.

An Asian breakfast is available at the ryokan. The ryokan is located in a geothermal area, with a number of hot springs nearby for guests to relax in. Rooms were clean and spacious, toilet was clean. We opted for the special dinner and was not disappointed!

We had an exceptional stay here and couldn't recommend it enough. We loved the old building and decor and the family history behind it. Maki was the best host, really friendly and helped make our stay a memorable one. This is a truly authentic Japanese experience and made our Japan trip a special one. The food was outstanding and prepared by Maki's mother. We loved that it was all locally sourced, fresh ingredients and all of this was explained to us by Maki, whose hospitality was some of the best we have encountered. Don't miss out on this special gem. When you book you have the whole place to yourself. We feel very lucky to have stayed here.

An incredible once in a life time authentic Japanese experience with charming hosts in an beautiful natural setting. The arrival lounge, onsen and breakfast room with the view towards the falls and the sound of them roaring while you soak in the onsen are spectacular. The food and presentation by the host Koike-san was delicious and a work of art and the dining room with an irori (indoor fire pit) was a special treat as was the Japanese breakfast. I only eat fish and poultry which was accommodated beautifully but Koike-san specialists in wild meats including local boar so for guests who love that, I am sure it would be delicious. (Note - we had one beer each and that was charged separately, cash only). Koike-san picked us up from the Tsumago carpark number 1 after we walked the Nakasendo Trail from Magome to Tsumago and he dropped us off the next day at the Nagiso train station where we caught the express train around 11am back to Nagoya.

The three private onsens were great - good and organized system and the space was kept very clean. Staff were really pleasant and great! They also provided complimentary access to the public next door which was a nice touch to the overall experience.
