This was a very nice change from the urban hotels during our travels around Japan. The proprietress is very charming and the breakfast prepared for us was very intricate with many Japanese foods. Sleeping and bathing traditional Japanese style is also something worth experiencing. To get there from Nara, take the train from Kintetsu Nara to Ikoma station where you can take the tramway up. You can just as quickly reach Ikoma station from Osaka. We visited in September and the last tram up was at 11pm. There was a restaurant open near the ryokan until 10pm (Indonesian). And if you are able to do some stairs, I highly recommend a visit in the morning to the temple complex above the ryokan. Keep following the steps above the first temples and you will find yourself on a truly magical path.

The ryokan also offers free use of bicycles. Kofuku-ji is 1.1 km from Musashino, while Kasuga Taisha is 300 metres from the property. The nearest airport is Osaka Itami Airport, 39 km from the property. Excellent service, location, food and accommodation. Simply perfect.

From the very first moment we arrived, we were blown away by the beautiful decor/landscaping and hospitable staff. The staff member(s) were excellent in explaining how to stay in a ryokan (as visitors with no experience, this was very helpful) by showing us around our room. We tried their restaurant's traditional Japanese breakfast and it was superb! Additionally, we booked a private onsen and it was so clean and relaxing, offering stunning views of the city. I cannot recommend this stay enough, we can't wait to go back!

Offering public baths, Sarusawaike Yoshidaya is situated in front of Sarusawa-ike Pond. Kofuku-ji Temple is just a 2-minute walk away. Free WiFi is available on site.

The front desk staff were SUPERIOR, the room was beyond our expectations. Located in the heart of NARA, it was a short walk to all of the attractions and downtown shopping/restaurant area. I can't say enough about the superior level of customer care we experienced and wish I could remember her name to give her credit directly.

Basic Japanese-style rooms overlook the temple compound, and feature a tatami (woven mat) floor, on which traditional futon bedding is spread to sleep in. They are fitted with air conditioning and a safe. This was one of the most beautiful places we’ve seen. Amazing traditional ryokan, great bath. Very friendly staff. The food was tasty! The overall experience is very special. The whole territory of the monastery is beautiful - both in the morning and at night. We took a little hike to the top of the hill, it was easy, and there’re sticks available.

A 12-minute walk from the Kintetsu Nara Train Station, Hotel New Wakasa offers Japanese-style rooms with tatami (woven-straw) flooring. A spacious public bath and foot bath is available for guests to relax in. Free luggage before and after check-in is available on site. Free WiFi is available at the entire building. The hotel is very nice including a superb view of the adjacent park. Very close to walk everywhere. Rooms are comfortable and shower has a very special design with a small external area. The reception and arrival services are outstanding. I only wish we could have stay longer.

Tsukihitei is located in the Kasugayama Primeval Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Each guest room has a Japanese-style decor and offer panoramic forest views, traditional tatami (woven-straw) floors, and shoji paper screens. Amazing forest location, staff super friendly. Great place to stay to have easy access to Nara park and the forest trail. Room was huge and had a private bathroom.

Featuring an open-air bath and views of quiet street, Ryokan Asukasou at the entrancne of Nara park is a recently renovated ryokan located in Nara, 1.8 km from Nara Station. It is set 20 km from Iwafune Shrine and provides a lift. There is a terrace and guests can make use of free WiFi, free private parking and an electric vehicle charging station. The staff were amazing and everything was so clean and welcoming.

The Japanese-style rooms at Mikasa Ryokan have traditional futon beds and tatami (woven-straw) floors. Each includes a flat-screen TV and private bathroom. Some rooms feature a private outdoor bath.

Kasugayama Primeval Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is right next to the ryokan. Wakakusayama Mountain, offering spectacular views of Nara, is a 10-minute drive away. Todai-ji Temple is a 7-minute drive. The location was great, very accessible via public transit as we took a train from Kyoto. The shuttle service provided by the hotel was efficient and the staff were friendly and accommodating. The meals provided (kaiseki dinner and breakfast) were also excellent! We booked a room with a private bath and it was spacious and comfortable. I also liked that the hotel provided a quick evening tour (free shuttle) to Wakakusayama Hill, which overlooks the city of Nara. While it was quite cloudy (we couldn't appreciate the stars in the sky) the view of the cityscape from the hill was breathtaking.
