Yasugi
Set in Yasugi, 26 km from Mizuki Shigeru Road, Shokinkan offers rooms with air conditioning and free WiFi. The property is situated 26 km from Lake Shinji, 27 km from Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum and 24 km from Matsue Station. Shimane Art Museum is 26 km from the ryokan. Very very nice typical Japanese ryokan remotely located next to a temple : amazing setting! The dinners and breakfasts were outstanding. The first dinner was fully veggie (pilgrim requirement perhaps) and delicious, then they asked us if we eat fish and meat, then had also fish and meat dishes. The ryokan-keepers were so kind and helpful to help us locate the place. Because, it is very remote and GPS coordinates not that accurate.
Matsue
Complete with a private bathroom equipped with bathrobes, the units at the ryokan have a flat-screen TV and air conditioning, and selected rooms are fitted with a terrace. All units will provide guests with a tatami and a kettle. Proprietor and his staff are outstanding. The most interesting surroundings and “real Japanese” feeling of our trip.

Izumo
Located near Atagoyama Park and Hirata Honjin Memorial Museum, Nipponia Izumo Hirata Cotton Road is in Izumo and provides free private parking and a restaurant. Featuring a garden, the 3-star ryokan has air-conditioned rooms with free WiFi, each with a private bathroom. Gakuen-ji Temple is 11 km away and Hamayama Park is 15 km from the ryokan. Having been to Izumo before and knowing it would not disappoint, I decided to take my family for another vacation in January. We stayed at Nipponia Izumo - Hirata Cotton Road for three nights. It is a former traditional sake brewery house converted into a kominka style hotel. Situated on a quiet historical sake and soy sauce business street, the hotel not only provided a unique home sweet home service but also amazing fine dining experience. Their in-house chef made each meal using local products to create feasts that delighted the senses. I highly recommend this hidden gem of an accommodation if you do visit Izumo.

Exactly what we hoped for from our stay in Shimane. A welcoming inn in an interesting building in a great location.
Friendly staff, exceptional food and a comfortable Japanese home.
Yasugi
At the ryokan, units have a tatami. Complete with a shared bathroom fitted with slippers, all units at the ryokan have a flat-screen TV and air conditioning, and certain rooms are equipped with a terrace. At the ryokan, each unit includes bed linen and towels. What can I say? This Ryokan was even better than how I’d pictured it. It’s hidden in a forest surrounded by nature and peacefulness. I even had a view from my room of the beautiful three story pagoda. The food is excellent and dinner comes in courses and beautifully presented like fine food (I chose the mostly vegetarian option), eaten in the private dining rooms with big windows to see the nature. The hot bath (not a true hot spring) has a schedule in evening and is freely available in the morning. I took a relaxing bath both morning and evening. It was exactly what I needed to get away from the hustle of the cities and recover from work stress. The owners are very kind, with one of them I was able to communicate a bit in English. I walked from the nearest train station there, which took me a bit under 1.5 hours. As I enjoy walking and the countryside is beautiful it wasn’t a problem, but it’s something to be mindful of, as there is no bus and the only other option is a taxi.
Tsuwano
Hoshi Ryokan is set in Tsuwano, 1.9 km from Tsuwano Joushi, 37 km from Ikoji Sesshu Garden, as well as 47 km from Yasaka Shrine. This 2-star ryokan offers luggage storage space. Free WiFi is available throughout the property and Taikodani Inari Shrine is 1.2 km away. Hoshi Ryokan is so good that staying there justifies the trip to Tsuwano all by itself. An immense tatami room (actually two, a bedroom and a sitting room) plus a veranda to sit and watch the world go by. The owners are extremely gentle and helpful (they picked us up from the station even if it is only just across the road, just because it was raining so hard) and the breakfast and dinner are well worth having, and not only because there are few other options in town. And you stay in a real family home, the way B&B used to be.

Great onsen-nice breakfast-spacious rooms. great valye for money
It was amazing with tatami mats in the hotel and not only in rooms. It felt good walking on them in the lobby and everywhere else. We liked very much onsen as well. I was there every evening during our stay.
Kitchen is nice with complimentary coffee and tea. Everything else was to my satisfaction. Futon beds over tatami are harder than a mattress but of course it's what was advertised so I'm ok with it.
This hotel is just stunning. Japanese-style, with tatami floors and a great onsen, sublime breakfast, perfect amenities and extras such as manga library, it is worth a visit in itself.
A great way to experience tatami mat bedroom. Everything was great except for the lack ventilation toilet. The house was tip top clean. Owner was friendly. Very near to the station and almost everything is a walk away. The futon was comfy. Room was warm with heater. Very peaceful area too.
Very, very, very beautiful ryokan. The owner already greeted us at the entrance and was extremely friendly. The room was also beautiful and made you feel like living in Edo period Japan. The onsen was very relaxing, and after it, my partner was offered to wear a nice yukata for dinner. The food was extraordinary (although it could mostly not be adjusted for my admittedly picky partner, see below), both in terms of taste and in the way it was presented. I would definitely recommend this ryokan anytime to any traveller.
Great location, the staff is extremely kind and welcoming, the room (double + tatami area) is comfortable. The onsen is small, but very pleasant
Hoshi Ryokan was a warmly welcomed few days …my good fortune was to coincide with Tsuwano’s traditional music and dance festival….the ryokan was positively helpful..I felt looked out for as have only a few phrases in Japanese…delicious food beautifully presented with a range of local sakes…tatami mats and futon in a gorgeous room..
