The host actually did speak a little bit of English which made it easier to understand questions about the accommodation and to even enjoy the food more (she told us how to eat some dishes together). I also liked that there were only 2 rooms so it felt cozy like staying at home.

Even I booked only a single room, I was surprised to find my tatami room so spacious with balcony opens to a beautiful koi pond. I was treated with a famous local biscuit as welcome gift. The breakfast was the tastiest and most eye-pleasing meal I had in my entire 2 weeks-trip. The clam soup was so fresh. The host helped to call the previous hotel I stayed because I left my adaptor & mobile charger there. He was kind to also let me use his charger that night. The room was warm in chilly autumn night and I had a good sleep after soaking in hot bath. It was rainy when I arrived and left the ryokan but because of the hospitality I received, I wished I could have stayed there for another night or 2.

Beautiful space with comfortable, well appointed rooms and lovely onsen. Its placement next to a dam and river made for some lovely walks around eh neighborhood.

The staff Yulley is so sweet and friendly. She served us all the time. Dinner and breakfast both are perfect. Classical Japanese style.

The best thing about this place is the people. Wonderful family is running this small cozy Inn along the road to Shirakawa-go from Toyama. We could not find affordable Inn in Shirakawa-go, so we chose this one just 40 minutes away. Very nice rooms decorated with good taste and comfortable. Toilet and sink are available in the room and the traditional bath separately for men and women is located downstairs. It was interesting to try it. Very helpful and friendly family members were willing to communicate and give us advice. And great meals were served with care and in a traditional way. We enjoyed our one night stay there a lot. At Akaokan, guests can relax in the spacious public hot-spring baths and visit the Historic Villages of Shirakawa-gō and Gokayama, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, situated a 20-minute drive away. We love the food! There was so much and the quality was good. Also, the bus stop was just outside the property, making it easy to take public transport there. We were able to visit Shirakawa-go and Suganuma World Heritage sites.
