Located in the sacred Koyasan area, Saizenin offers simple accommodation surrounded by mountains and many temples. Originally developed as a lodging for the temples’ pilgrims, it conducts Buddhist services every morning that guests can attend. Nankai Koyasan Train Station is a 15-minute drive away. Everything was beautiful and I love to take the budist ceremony with the monks. This place is beautiful and quiet just what I was looking for after long trip. The staff was very nice and kind.

A 1000 year-old Buddhist temple, Shukubo Koya-san Eko-in offers Japanese-style accommodation, a beautiful garden and free WiFi. Guests are free to attend Buddhist morning services, the Goma fire ritual and meditation. We were curious about the vegetarian food that was offered in this place, and it was a nice pleasant surprise. The rooms were big, compared to other places where we stayed in Japan, and they had heaters available, to cope with the cold. This place was right on the main street of the town, so its location is very convenient to get around town.

Set in Koyasan and only 39 km from Kishi Station, 高野山 宿坊 大明王院 -Koyasan Shukubo Daimyououin- offers accommodation with garden views, free WiFi and free private parking. This 3-star ryokan offers full-day security. Matsushita Park is 45 km away and Subaru Hall is 47 km from the ryokan. When we arrived, they welcomed us with tea and a small sweet, which was lovely. Our room was large and looked out to the garden, which was gorgeous. We went in November and the autumnal colours in the garden and the town were absolutely beautiful. In the morning we had the privilege to attend the prayer and we received a blessing. After breakfast it started to snow, so we spent an hour watching the garden slowly turn white, it was magical. The communal toilets were clean and the communal bath was small but comfortable. Because the town is up in the mountains, and the building is all wood and paper walls it was very cold in the corridors, but we had heating in the room and nice thick covers for the night. A highlight of the stay were the dinner and the breakfast. All vegan food, very tasty even for us, who are not vegan or vegetarian. It is very conveniently located to visit Okunoin cemetery, we took part in a night tour, something that we highly recommend. All in all it was a magical stay and I would highly recommend it.

Set in Koyasan and only 38 km from Kishi Station, Koyasan Shukubo Fugenin offers accommodation with garden views, free WiFi and free private parking. This 3-star ryokan offers luggage storage space and bicycle parking. Matsushita Park is 45 km from the ryokan and Wanpaku Park is 47 km away. We stayed two nights in Koyasan at Fugen-in temple and it left a long-lasting impression of serenity and kindness. The temple has a long history and many works of art. Attending the morning prayer was a meditative experience. The monks were very friendly and explained about the Haiku temple in Fugen-in's garden. Breakfast and dinner were amazing, so well-balanced and lovingly prepared. The room was clean and had everything we needed, we felt well taken care of. The water of the onsen was very hot and relaxing. Fugen-in's location is perfect, very central and right around the corner of the tourist information. What also stays with us is the beautiful sound of the local cicadas.
